orchiopexy surgery (repost)

We just saw the surgeon today.  His surgery is schedule for the end of Sept.  Just wanted to see if any other LOs have had this done.  How was recovery?  The surgeon said he would put a button over the incision...and that he would take it off at the 2 week post-op appt.  Any experiences would be appreciated!  Thank you!

Yup! Dean had two actually, one for each (there was a suspected problem with one and they wanted to biopsy it and let it heal before doing the other - not a problem you'll run into, I'm guessing!). Anyway, the recovery was great, and he had other stuff done too during the same surgery.

And when they say "button," they mean a legit shirt button. LOL It's pretty funny looking. I thought it was going to be a medical device that they *call* a button, but no, it's a button. LOL

I'm on my way out the door, but let me know if you have any more questions.

Haha...really?  I would never have thought it would be a real button.  lol Thanks for the info!  He seemed really nice...but he was concerned about intubating Aiden bc of his laryngeal cleft.  He has had sedated procedures and surgeries before and no one has ever had a concern about this.  He told me to make sure I told anesthesiologist about it. Kind of strange.  He said that Aiden probably has a hernia there and that is why is didnt descend.  So, they will fix that first then create a pathway for the testicle...and secure it in place.  Hoping it's an easy recovery for him. Was yours outpatient?

Yes, we had this done on Carter while he was still in the hospital at about 2 months old. When he went in for his G-tube placement, we did the orchiopexy (testicle was floating and we didn't know it), hernia (HUGE!) repair, and circumcision. Poor kid, huh? He had been successfully extubated prior to this, but after this surgery he had the breathing tube again due to a collapsed lung during surgery. I was so concerned about intubating him again, and now I know I had reason to be. But, our kiddo had airway issues and was hard to extubate the first time. I am sure you won't have this problem.

We had the procedure done while he was still in the hospital, so I can't give you relevant recovery information. What I can tell you is that the orchiopexy seemed to heal very quickly compared to all the other surgeries he had that day. And we didn't have any button. Just maybe some gauze and that was it. Hope this helps!

Nate had his done at 4 months old because he also had a iguinal hernia that was HUGE.  We got to the hospital at 8 am and were out by 2:30.

He has a little scar near his hip that was closed on the outside with steri-strips and he also had an incision on the bottom of his scrotum that was glued shut. It really didn't seam to bother him at all. We just needed to not lift him up under the arms for about a week and keep him from being too active for a few days.

    Good Luck!

Thanks ladies.  Aiden's wasn't found until I mentioned it to his pedi a couple months ago (though its quite obvious).  I guess I assumed that with all the specialists he has been seeing someone would have caught it earlier.  But, I guess they were all preoccupied with the other things going on with him to thoroughly check.  I am glad to hear that it seems to be a fairly easy recovery.  Thanks for the info!
