Breastfeeding

Engorgment Question

Hi Ladies...just trying to get some insight here...any input would be greatly appreciated!

Ok...so I need a bit of further information on this whole engorgement thing. Most of the info I am finding on the internet is more for women who have already been breastfeeding for a bit, and it's an issue of missing a feed, etc...what I am experiencing is just the beginning of my milk coming in. My right breast seems fairly well regulated, and I can get LO to nurse off the right. However, the left breast is HUGE and rock hard, way worse than the right. I have tried a warm compress, pumping and expressing, but the most I can get out is a few drops, since my boobs aren't really spewing milk yet.

What I am concerned about is that since I can't get DS to latch onto the left at all, that he's not getting enough from the right side (although he's content after feeding and is dirtying diapers), and that my left breast will just end up infected or drying up completely.

I suppose my question is did any of you experience engorgement worse on one side than the other? And if you did, did it start to correct itself on it's own? I just want it to calm down enough that I can get DS to latch on...

Thanks!

Re: Engorgment Question

  • I was so engorged I had to use a nipple shield for about a week and a half until I got over it so that DS could latch at all on either side.  It was a life saver!!!

  • For me, I did have one worse than the other. The nipple shield helps but if you are pumping, stay on it for about 15-20 minutes.  Your let down may be slow.  This will correct over time.
