Non alcoholic wine?

Does anyone know of any non alcoholic wine that actually tastes good?  I've been wanting a good glass of wine lately, and well that's obviously not possible.  Any suggestions?

  • Will be watching for recommendations... the ones I've tried were terrible:(

You really can have a glass of wine now and then (assuming you have a liver), especially since you're in 2nd tri!

  • I've been making "drinks" with Blueberry Lemonade and sparkling water. I put it in a wine glass to make it special haha

I'm not sure where you have been given this information but there is no amount of alcohol that is considered safe during pregnancy.

I am actually not posting this to be judgemental towards those who have chosen to drink during pregnancy, that is entirely another discussion. I just really felt it was important to challenge your statement here. I wouldn't want someone reading this and really thinking that there is no risk to moderate alcohol consumption. There is no documented amount that is considered safe according to the Surgeon General and many other medical sources.

I don't think you should do anything you're uncomfortable with and I'm not trying to convince anyone to drink.  But there isn't any evidence that small amounts of alcohol (a glass of wine once in a while) are dangerous.  Studies on FAS and FAE involved women who had 5-6 drinks every day.  The no alcohol whatsoever thing is very American - women in other countries wouldn't think to give up wine with dinner, at least after the first trimester.  There are actually studies that found children of mothers who drank small amounts of wine during pregnancy fared better in some ways than other children.  I'll bet that a woman being obese, just as an example, is far more dangerous to her baby than a little vino on occasion.

  • As far as the you can or cannot drink - there is no set rule on how much alcohol each baby can stand without feeling it or having the side effects (FAS) so my doctor said "Why risk it?"  I will not be drinking during this pregnancy.  He also pointed out that you have had years to build your tolerance up and when you feel a slight buzz your peach sized baby could be wasted.  Not exactly what I feel is a smart move when you should be thinking of your baby above yourself.

That being said -  there is a decent non alcohol wine out there called Fre - pronounced "Free" - they have a few different flavors.  You can tell it's non alcoholic but it's nice to sip a glass while everyone else does as well.

  • A glass of wine, especially red wine, now and again, has definite health perks.  As long as you are not getting drunk.  Everyone's tolerance is different, if you normally get tipsy after one glass of wine, then it's better to make it a spritzer (mix half a glass of wine with half a glass of soda) to water it down. Definitly only do what you are comfortable with, I'm not trying to convince people to have a glass of wine, but don't crusify other people for making an informed decision they are comfortable with either.

Well said.  By no means am I implying I drink regularly (or that anyone should).  Just saying the argument isn't well-founded.

I don't think anyone has "crucified" anyone here for their decisions. As far as I can see it has been a discussion about differing opinions.

Bottom line, imho, is that people need to make their own decision based (hopefully) on factual research and caregiver (OB,MW,etc) advice, not just what they "feel" is the right thing to do.

  • I feel your pain...I miss that glass of wine!!! I have tried almost every alcohol free wine substitute now, and have to admit I am super picky. Ariel's Cabernet is by far the best. Every merlot I have tried has been HIDEOUS (just go buy some grape juice), and Fre's cabernet is second but there is still no mistaking it for wine. I have had better luck with alcohol free beer and "virgin" mixed drinks.

I was a bit of a party girl prior to pregnancy and still haven't chosen to share the pregnancy, so it makes it a bit easier to "blend" at social events.

As far as safety and drinking is concerned, there are two schools of thought:

    (1) As someone mentioned above, this is a cultural thing. Many women drink small amounts of alcohol in other countries and have shown no evidence of complications. Even doctors vary in the advice and recommendations they give.

    (2) As seen above, some say NO amount of alcohol is safe.

Bottom line is ask yourself this: If something is wrong with your baby (I know...I hate to even say that out loud, for any of us), how will you feel about your behaviors during pregnancy? In the interest of full disclosure I have to admit I have had three sips of wine from the glasses of others on separate occasions because I lack discipline at times, but I feel ok about that - I think even my bird wouldn't catch a buzz from that amount (LOL). You decide what YOU  are comfortable with.

So, to summarize, try the Ariel Cab (NOT the others - they're gross!) and the Fre Chardonnay.

  • I do not feel comfortable drinking during my pregnancy. I will try the Ariel Cab and the Fre Chardonnay.  Thanks for the suggestions!
