Cloth Diapering

How much have you spent...

/did you spend on starting your cloth diaper stash? I'd like to get an idea of what I'll be looking at paying when I start shopping for diapers. I'm thinking I may use disposables the first few weeks until baby gets a little bigger. Not sure yet though. If you'd like you can include what types of diapers you bought. I really appreciate it.

  • my mom and I make my covers and liners, so we're just buying the supplies at this point. We've made our own pattern using Thirsties as a template with very good results.

PUL- $6/yd and get 5-6 covers per yard.

cotton velour - $8/yd, I think. I don't remember as we bought it awhile ago.

    hemp- $5/yd

Elastic, snaps, velcro, and other misc supplies.

Overall, we have less than $200 invested, with quite a bit of cotton and hemp for when we start making the size 2 covers/liners. I think we'll make it through PTing for well under $300. Not bad for twins.

Our stash right now consists of 14 or 15 covers, and around 25 cotton/hemp liner sets.

  • I've spent around $300 and I think I'm covered for at least the first year. I only spent about $60 on the NB stash... 24 prefolds from GMD and 5 NB prowraps. I figure I'd spend at least $60 on disposables for the NB stage and with prefolds I can use them as inserts, burp rags and cleaning cloths for years after I'm done diapering with them.

  • I spent approx $130 for 36 infant sized prefolds, 3 snappis and 6 thirsties duo covers.
  • $480 for 24 FuzziBunz (less than that since 12 were bought for our shower and we bought the other 12).  We are doing Huggies Pure and Natural disposables until cord falls of, meconium is done and she fits in to the pocket OS.

Where did you get your supplies from and do those prices include any shipping?  I really want to make some, but I'm still sifting through all the fabrics to figure out what I should be using and where to get it!

To the OP, I spent about $300 for 3 boys (just got stocked, and my boys are 38mo, 23mo, and 1mo).  I got 6 Thirsties Duo Wrap Covers (2 for each), 24 Infant Prefolds, 24 Premium Prefolds, and 40 Sunbaby Pocket Diapers.  I also just spend about $20 getting a garbage can and pillow cases for my pail, and bought a package of washclothes for wipes.  So I'm about $320 in for 3 kids.

I could have done cheaper had I just stuck with a couple more covers and about double the prefolds, but I really wanted the ease of the pocket diaper for when DH/my mom/my sisters change them.

I've ordered from Very Baby and Kids in the Garden. Very Baby has a wider selection of patterns and notions, but their PUL is a bit more expensive. Kids in the Garden is a bit cheaper and has a better color variety. I'm partial to the PUL variety packs that Kids in the Garden offers.  I've also heard that JoAnn's carries PUL in some of their stores that can be down as low as $5/yd if you can catch it on sale. They don't carry it at my local, smaller JoAnn's though.

  • we spent just over $200 on her 12 BG 3.0's, a couple dollars on wipe solutions and wipes (bought 8, then decided to make my own), $40 on a diaper sprayer (love it!), $10 on detergent, (finally spent $10 on our second box just last week) and about $12 on travel wet bags. This is going great and would be fine for us (we still use one disposable at night), but I want to switch to CD at night, so I just spent $40 more dollars on two thirsties duo wraps, 6 PF's and one snappi (just to test, though I think I'm just going to lay them in). we've been doing it for almost 8 months now (started when she was 3 weeks old with the BG's.)
  • $400.00 for the actual diapers.  $20 on wipes.  $60 on dry/wet bags.
