Not including cereal,
When did you start introducing baby food to your baby?
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not?
What food(s) did you start with?
I've read to wait until 6 months but I know so many people who introduced foods as early as 3 months to their babies. I'm still going to wait until 6 months since we're almost there but wanted some feedback.
Re: Baby food questions...
When did you start introducing baby food to your baby? Started at 6 months - partly b/c that's what was "recommended" and partly b/c it was just easier to give a bottle! :-)
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? No, I didn't have (make?) enough time to do it - but I have some SAHM friends who did it and they saved a lot of money. Just cooking everyhing in one day, and using those meals for weeks! There are certain foods that you aren't supposed to make into baby food, though - so I would watch out for those.
What food(s) did you start with? Sweet potatoes was a favorite. Green beans, carrots, fruits, etc.

It's so much easier to give a bottle - I was glad to wait. :-)
We skipped cereal entirely.
Cameron started solids about 2 weeks before the 6 month mark, mainly b/c he started diving open-mouthed at food I was holding.
Yes, I've been making all my own food. It's easy, cheap, and smells/tastes better.
We started with mashed up avocado.
When did you start introducing baby food to your baby? The week after she hit 4 months.
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? Yes. It's cheaper (depending on the food and season, we're talking a cost of .06 and .21 a serving so far), fresher, and tastier. And I have plenty of time on my hands.
What food(s) did you start with? We skipped rice cereal all together and started with avocado.
When did you start introducing baby food to your baby? I first offered around 5 months, he wasn't really ready so I laid off and tried again around 5.5 months because he was grabbing handfuls off my plate. However he really ate very little of everything we offered until after 6.5 months when he really started eating. I believe in letting baby lead, when he showed he was interested I offered, when he wasn't really into it I waited a week or two and tried again.
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? I do some of both. I work full time and just don't want to spent the time preparing the variety of things I want him to try, I'd rather spend that time playing with him. That said, I've been experimenting w/ different brands/kinds and they are not all gross. The Plum Baby Organics are really tasty and all organic, no weird ingredients etc. I also like the Happy Baby Organics brand and there are a few others I intend to try soon but haven't. Mostly I intend to move onto real food as quickly as possible.
What food(s) did you start with? We did oatmeal instead of rice cereal followed shortly by avocado and banana.
When did you start introducing baby food to your baby? six months
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? I made all of F's food, I felt it gave me more control and it was economical/easy
What food(s) did you start with? Her first food was avocado, then bananas. I never gave her rice cereal.
So Tasty, So Yummy
When did you start introducing baby food to your baby? we gave him veggies at 4.5 months. The kid was hungry, though. We'd been giving him cereal since 3 months!
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? I've made almost all of my own. I did it because I felt like it was less expensive. Some items aren't, but most of the time they are. And it turned out to be really easy. I haven't made any meats and just have been giving him shredded pork or chicken when we eat it. I also didn't make prunes - I only gave him those a few times to clean his pipes.
What food(s) did you start with? We started with green peas. Cooper LOVED them. That kid can put down some food.
ETA: Some things I've skipped because of cost and season. I did regular suqash last night for the first time. He just had peaches this week because they are $$. I've never given him pears - again, $$. Apples can be kind of high for the amount you get (I feel) but then you can buy a bag of baby carrots for $1 and get over 2 trays so it evens out in the end.
Not including cereal, When did you start introducing baby food to your baby? The Pedi suggested that we start Evan on solids at 4 months due to his reflux. He cries each time we try to give him solids (4 attemps since he turned 4 months) even though he stares at us when we eat and he makes eating motions.
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? We have tried organic Gerber. I am too lazy right now to make my own, especially since he won't really eat it. Oh and there was a sale on the twin pack of the Gerber foods so we bought one of each flavor stage 1 food. I wonder if he would like Avacado instead. They didn't have that.
What food(s) did you start with? We tried rice cereal, pears, and sweet potatoes. He isn't a fan of anything yet. The yucky face he makes is priceless, but he does the same thing when we have given him apple jiuce for his constipation. He only wants milk right now.

Dx: PCOS and short luteal phase
18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

He started eating baby food at six months. I was in no hurry to start. Nursing was easy and not messy! We introduced one meal a month, so he started with just breakfast. Then at seven months added another and eight months his last meal.
I did make my own food. I am not a cook at all, but it was cheaper and really easy, especially at first. They hardly eat anything to start with.
We started with oatmeal, then avocado, then bananas (still two of his favorite things).
Not including cereal, When did you start introducing baby food to your baby? Pedi said anytime after 4 months but felt at least 5 months was better so that is when we started.
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? We did jarred food. It just seemed easier with working full time. I did try to make a few things (sweet potato, avocado, etc) but DS would not touch them and had no trouble with the jarred so that is how we stayed!
What food(s) did you start with? Our pedi just gave us a recommended schedule so we followed that pretty much to a T...started with cereals and then did veggies and finished with fruits
When did you start introducing baby food to your baby?We started on his 5 month bday. We started before 6 moths because he was more than ready. he displaced all the signed that shows he is ready: grabbing for your food/utensil, no longer had the reflex where he'd push things out of his mouth, wasn't satisfied with just a bottle, etc.
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? For the most part. It's way cheaper, you control what is going in it and there is so much more you can give your child than the few things they make and put in a jar, etc. Right now one of DS's favorite foods is kiwi. Not something you'll find pre-made.
That said, there are a couple of companies that have nice options for bought food: Ella, Sprout, & Plum. I used that when we go somewhere since it's easier than the containers i have his homemade food in.
What food(s) did you start with? we first started with cereal..the rice with no problem and then the first other solids were avocado, green beans and peas. That was basically his first month. Each for more or less a week.
What do you mean cooking everything in one day? I'd be very interested in this. I can spend a Sunday chopping and mashing all day, but won't be able to cook everyday for DD. Tell me more about what you cooked, how you store it, etc.
@cali_girl
You seem to be able to read my mind! I guess our daughters are going through exactly the same phases
We started with avocado for Cameron. I bought several, threw them in the food processor, then put the "mush" into ice cube trays and froze them. Starting out, he took very little, so it was 1 cube/day.
The next weekend, I bought pears, apples, zucchini, and yellow squash. I spent a few hours that day steaming things and throwing them in the food processor, then freezing. Frozen cubes then go in labeled Ziplocs.
Basically, every weekend (or so) I would do a few more things to throw in the freezer. Now I have a whole slew of baby food in the freezer and only have to fix something if/when we start to run out of something - and at this rate, I think he'll be eating all table foods before I get to that point. I might have spent a total of 5-6 hours spread over a few Saturday or Sunday afternoons getting it all fixed and in the freezer.
Crazy Christmas Kids!
Same as the pps said - my friend bought a whole bunch of stuff, cooked it, food processed it, and froze it in ice cube trays, then popped the frozen food cubes out into a ziploc - wrote on the outside what it was and stored it in the freezer (all in one day). Then at each meal throughout the weeks, just popped whatever she wanted in the microwave for a few secs to defrost.
I can't imagine making each meal by hand daily! :-) Some ppl probably do it, though.
When did you start introducing baby food to your baby? Around 4.5 months. Did cereal for about a week first.
Did you make your own baby food? Why or why not? Mostly do jarred food. It's easier for us. I buy the Earth's Best organic. I'm making more and more now that he's starting to eat table food though.
What food(s) did you start with? Sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, green beans, peas, then apples, bananas, peaches, pears, and other 1 ingredient fruits and veggies.
