School-Aged Children

This is a bento lunch.

I have never tried to make one but am very excited about getting started.  Im going to start with these 20.  Over on the preschool board there is a "cute lunch check in" and they do bento lunches and post pics.  They are very cute and creative.  I will be doing some of those as well.

Here is a link to show what they are and look like...

Im going to start off trying to do them at least twice a week.  I want to have a good system going before next year when I will have 3 to make.  The girls preschool would rather us not have them pack their lunch so they eat what they have.  Next year they will be in Kindy though.

Re: This is a bento lunch.

  • I think they're so much easier to pack than regular bag lunches -- of course mine aren't any where near as elaborate as the ones in that link!  DDs love them and I love that it is so environmentally friendly.  I have the laptop boxes but just ordered one of the goodbyn boxes for my oldest DD (it is much larger than the others).

Im new to it...never made one, dont have a single box...school starts next Monday and DS wants to pack so he can use his new lunch box that matches his book bag.

Does Target carry any sort of bento box.  I need something cheap that I can buy quick and then research and find something better later.  I will have to check out the one you mentioned.  Thanks. :)

  • I bookmarked a bunch of those last week to try and make! They look so cute.  I don't know if Target carries the boxes, but my local Disney store did.  They come in all the characters and were 3/$12!!

    Good luck!!!

  • These are relatively cheap: https://www.easylunchboxes.com/.

I bought them at the beginning of the summer for pool/picnic etc use.  I was eyeing the laptop lunchboxes, but they're a little expensive and I knew I'd have to get two.

I like the easy lunchboxes because they fit in thermal bags I already have - didn't have to buy their bags.  They fit a sandwich and then two additional snacks.  I know they have gladware or ziploc that are like this too, but these are much more sturdy.

I haven't done the cutsey bento meals - just normal stuff.  My DS is picky and wouldn't go for much (although I keep thinking I should buy the hot dog octopus maker).  I don't know if this is how I'll pack for school or not - depends on what he wants to take, I guess.  But, I love them for outings.

  • Just an FYI for anyone looking for a bento box, the one from Pottery Barn Kids is awful. The flap on the inside doesn't stay shut, and the joints on the latches are flimsy and cheap, and don't look like they'd last long at all. I'm returning the one I ordered.

they work great. I am not a huge fan, I prefer a real bento

here is the Target Fit & Fresh one in action: I don't typically go this plane but this was for the park:

cucumber flowers, sunbutter & jelly sandwiches, pitted sliced cherries. Then I could have put something on the bottom if I wanted. Like a juice box.

and ditto on the PBK ones suck. Bentos should be easy for kids to open. They shouldn't be struggling to open them. If you live in an area with a kitchen supply store, they have great containers for bentos.
