Is anyone else worried that they're not getting enough veggies? I normally really enjoy them and had always assumed I would eat plenty during pregnancy, but I have eaten fewer veggies in the last few weeks than I have in a long time. All I can stand the thought of eating is meat, carbs, salty/spicy/sour foods, and green grapes.
I'm trying to sneak veggies in wherever I can. On Monday and Tuesday I craved a Subway BLT so I got lettuce, tomato, green peppers, cucumbers, and banana peppers on it. Yesterday at lunch I was actually able to stomach a salad with grilled shrimp so that comforted me a bit.
I feel lucky to get 1, maybe 2 servings per day these days.
Does anyone else worry about this? Vegetables are so critical to good health and development and it concerns me out that I am barely eating them. I am 6w2d and I've felt like puking just thinking about eating them for at least two weeks now.
Re: Anyone else worry about veggies?
I've been drinking V8 Fusion juice... it's really good and extra good for you! Try that!
I know it's not the same, but I always drink V8 Fusion while I'm pregnant.. it tastes like fruit juice and one glass contains a full serving of fruits and veggies. Maybe that would be a way to get more "veggies" without feeling like puking at the thought?
edit: I love the Pomegranate Blueberry Fusion!
Ha, I love how you all suggested V8 Fusion. I totally forgot about that. I will do that! Or even just V8 because a lot of days I can't stomach anything sweet (very unusual for me).
I did think about making green monster shakes in the blender but the thought made me nauseous.
I just had another idea - I'll make a spicy Spanish rice dish and spice up the veggies and maybe that will work. That way I get my spicy carbs and would probably also be able to stomach the veggies.
DH just suggested hiding veggies in burgers, too, since I haven't had trouble eating burgers. This one restaurant nearby makes a cali burger with avacado and salsa and I'll have them add a pile of spinach or something.
I just need to think outside the box of my normal veggie habits (raw, not usually seasoned). If I season them more or serve them up in different ways that should help.
Thanks girls, I feel better now.
I'll go pick up some V8 Fusion and regular V8 next time I'm at the store.
It's gotten better for me, but for a while the thought of anything green made me gag. Now I can stomach a salad daily for lunch, but I'm still working up to more veggies at dinner. I try to put them in whereever I can. In sauces, meats, etc. But I will also get some V8 Fusion!
I've been much the same and really only able to think about eating pasta. I've graduated from plain pasta with lemon juice to pasta with sauce, and so I've been 'sneaking' the veggies into my sauce, and blueberries into my morning oatmeal, and trying to choke down an orange juice here and there. I'm usually a total fresh veggie fanatic, but I just can't even think about them at the moment.
I switched my prenatal vitamin to one that is food derived, and have felt a little better. I've also decided to stop stressing about it and just double up in the second trimester.
I've actually craved healthy stuff this time around, so I'm not worried. But everything I've read says basically the baby takes what it needs from you, so while your nutrition may suffer if you're not eating enough of the good stuff, the baby's won't.
So many people are sick and can't eat and lose weight in the first tri and go on to have perfectly healthy and smart babies. I wouldn't stress yourself out too much. Take a prenatal and eat as healthy as you can.
This is me exactly!! Has been for weeks. I tried turkey meatballs and ground up veggies and put them in. I ate a couple then got rid of the rest, I couldn't even have them in my fridge. I've been doing the V8 Fusion, but I have to force it down and dilute it with water. Tonight I'm thinking of turkey pot pie with veggies in there b/c the crust and sauce sound really good to me! I also made pumpkin bread today b/c I read in one of my books that orange veggies are esp important (and thats making me feel better even though its loaded with fat and sugar!). My doctor said not to worry about it, and I"m just doing the best I can right now.

this exactly.
dont worry, do what you can. many, many, many women are in the same boat. the first trimester you just need to focus on surviving.
the baby takes everything it needs from you. i have had horrendous m/s with both pregnancies and cant keep anything down for the first 16 weeks, except soup and crackers. my ob said the babies are like leaches...they will take everything they need from you. for instance, i got several cavities after my first pregnancy and my ob said my baby took a lot of nutrients from my teeth. so there you have it.
im totally opposite of this, i cant eat anything but fruits and veggies.
Everything else makes me gag all day long. I cant wait for this part of pregnancy to be done with and over!
