s/o: How old were you when you started Kindergarten?

I was 5 yrs. 2 mo. I graduated HS just days away from my 18th bday. I was top of my class.

My sis was 5 yr 11 mo when she started kindy. Turned 18 just a couple weeks after starting her Sr. year of HS, and also graduated top of her class.

And my other sis, 5 yr 10 mo at kindy. Turned 18 two months after starting her Sr. year of HS, and struggled to make decent grades her entire life.

I think that the age thing is somewhat arbitrary, and has little bearing on academics.

Re: s/o: How old were you when you started Kindergarten?

  • I guess I would've been 5 yrs 3 months. And, since I have a May birthday I was actually always one of the younger kids in my class. Boggles my mind that some states allow 4 year olds to start kindergarten!

  • I turned 6 years old in Oct. of my kinder year. My mom held my older brother back so she felt like she had to hold me back so that we were not in the same grade.
  • I started KG at 4 y/o and turned 5 a couple weeks into the school yr.  Graduated at 17 and have a college and grad degree.

My sisters (one older and one younger) started KG at 5 y/o and 5 mos.  Both graduated at 18, bottom of the class and neither has a college degree (one is this.close to getting one at almost 30 y/o).

I sometimes wonder how we are from the same family.

  • 4. I turned 5 the next week or so (my birthday is 9/1).  Unless my bday was labor day weekend that year, then I was actually 5.  But it was close.
  • I was 5yrs 11months and 3wks. I missed it by 1wk. I would have done fine in the class above me, I was always the top of the class.
  • I turned 5 in July, so I was 5 yrs 2 months.  I always did well in school academically, but I was shy.  And that's what I don't want for dd.  It makes you a target for bullies.
  • I was 4 years 11.5 months.

The cutoff was 9/30 and I made it by 2 weeks. I was 17 when I graduated, and did not turn 18 until I was a freshman in college.

My kids will be the opposite (both December birthdays with 9/30 cutoff). They will start school at 5 3/4 years old.

This is what I worry about for DD. Was it hard for you to start college so young?

What would be so difficult about it?  You're a freshman anyway, 3/4 of the school is older than you.  In a way it's cool, you get to celebrate a bday up at college.  But, by that point you're used to having friends that are a couple months older and younger than you.  It's really not a big deal at all.

  • My roommate turned 18 our first month of our freshman year. She was incredibly immature, even though she had attended boarding school for her last three years of high school.

I worry that DD would be too young to handle some of the older people in college. At 17, you are still considered a minor.

  • I was 5 yrs 9 mos. when I started K.   I did decently academically.    My sister turned 5 in October of K and was Valedictorian.

  • I was 4 yrs 11 mos & turned 5 on 9/21. I did fine in school. I was in accelerated English & Math classes. I, too, went off to college at 17 yrs old. For the person who asked, I was fine going off to college at that point. I was used to being one of the youngest in my class. I graduated nursing school in 4 yrs without a problem & was on the dean's list.

This was my dad (exactly) and he hated it. I was 5 years 5 months. I had several friends that have the same b-day as DD (end of Nov) and they were all "held-back". The youngest kids I knew turned 5 in July or early August.

  • About 5 yr 5 months. I was a Smarty Mcsmartypants, too.

  • I was 5 and turned 6 in November.  I loved being older, especially when I got my drivers license.

Back then we only had one kindergarten (rather than junior k at 4 yrs and senior k at 5 years). I was 5 years 6 months.

And not to sound like JoeBunny or anything, but I then proceeded to skip grade one. So I was the youngest in my class right on up to graduation and it made no difference....until I was 18 and my friends were all 19 and legally able to drink Tongue Tied Nothing that a good fake ID didn't fix.

Back then it was generally *assumed* that kids who were older than the majority of the class had failed a grade. I guess with all this red-shirting that will no longer be the case.

Actually PMQ, I did not go to kindergarten at all.

  • I turned 5 the first week of K. I graduated at 17 and did average but didn't apply myself either.

My boys will be nearly 6 going into K b/c they have Nov/Dec birthdays.

    Mommy to three adorable boys!
  • skipped it - started first grade at 5 years 4 months.  Graduated HS not long after turning 17.  Finished college classes at 20, turned 21 a week before the graduation ceremony (and in the middle of my 2 weeks of job hunting in DC).

Graduated with honors from college, was in the top 10 (I think I graduated 9th in my class of 360) in my very competitive HS.

  • I was 4 yrs and 10 months when I started Kindergarden.  I graduated HS and started college at 17.  I was one of the youngest in my class.

DD (born on the same day) will be almost 6 when she goes to Kindergarden.  The cutoff in FL is 9/1.

  • I started at 4 and didn't turn 5 until 1/10. (the cutoff was different).  My mom said I was ready.  My brother who has a 12/23 bday didn't start until 5 almost 6 b/c she said he wasn't ready.  In both cases it was the right thing.  We both did fine.
  • I was 4yrs11mos when I started kindergarten.  I was consistently the -- or on of the -- youngest kids in my class all through school as our cut-off was October 1.  I was an honors student and maintained straight As my entire school career.

My sister was 5yrs10mos when she started kindergarten.  She struggled throughout school and we weren't sure that she'd graduate with her class until the last minute.

My youngest sister was 5yrs6mos when she started.  She was an honors student with straight As.

  • I was 4 and turned 5 at the end of September. I was fine throughout school and college; however, my brother was 4 and turned 5 at the end of November. He was way too immature for school and should have been held another year. He did OK grade wise, but he has always seemed younger than his friends (even now).

turned 18 a month into freshman year at Eastern Mich.

  • There was no one to pick me up with the half day schedule, so they just put me in 1st grade.  I turned 5 that September.

LMAO! I never said you did or didn't...what I meant was I didn't mean to sound like I think I'm all smart and stuff, ya know?

    No danger of that.

  • I was 5yr as of a few weeks prior,  dh was 5 yrs as of around the first or second week of school (I'm an end of july bday, he's and end of august bday).  we were 17 when we graduated... both have bachelor's degrees... he has a phd.  He was shy as a young child, but more outgoing in h.s. , I was outgoing as a child, became more shy with puberty and changing schools to a catholic h.s. (7th grade).  totally depends on the child.  I think the friends they choose later will determine overall academic success more than whether you redshirt them for kindie or not.    my bro is an example of that.  nov bday, turned 6 a few months after starting kindie.  smart kid, but when made that school transition at 7th grade, picked the wrong group to hang with.  got into partying and drugs... never went to college.  he's smart. remembers everything, well read now.  but he partied hard from about 16 to 28yr/o.  now in his 30s with a young child ... he wishes he would have done things differently.

  • My birthday is in April so I would have been 5 yrs 5 mos.

I did well academically, but since preschool wasn't all that common in my area, I was super shy and definitely wasn't prepared socially.

  • I was 4 y 9 mo when I started.

The cutoff for MI was Dec 1st and my b-day was 2 weeks later and I guess my mom really wanted me to go to school! She forged my birth certificate to say Dec 1st (I went to a small private elementary school).

Mom told me I was a bit behind socially but I never struggled academically.

I remember being a freshman in college and not being able to go to the bar with my friends because I wasn't 18 until that December!
