It's not compulsory in my state (MN). I dont really know of anyone who's skipped it entirely, or why they would do that in the first place, but it's not required.
I wonder if in states where it is not required, if public schools would enroll a child in Kindergarten who was held back by the parents with no real reason? Couldn't the school just automatically put the kid in 1st grade if that is what grade they should be because of their birthday and cut off dates?
Voluntary in NJ (where I'm from) and I think also in NY (where I currently am). I only discovered it was voluntary in NJ after their governor massively cut education funding and some public schools were forced to completely discontinue K . I'm pretty sure it is in NY because if you try to enroll a kid who will be 6 before the cutoff of 12/31 in K they will automatically be registered for 1st instead.
