3rd Trimester

Estimated Weight vs. Actual Weight

I had a 33 week u/s and my OB said baby is measuring at 5 pounds 10 ounces.  At an average weight gain of half a pound a week we'll have a 9+ pound baby on our hands *shudder*

I'm wondering for those of you who already have children, how accurate were your OB's when estimating birth weight?

TIA!

Re: Estimated Weight vs. Actual Weight

  • My mom is an u/s tech and said that it can go 2lbs either way.  I wouldn't put a ton of stock into the weight guesses.

  • I've never had a growth u/s (not with DS or with this LO), so I can't really say.  But, I do read on here often that those things tend to over estimate baby's weight by up to a pound or more!

Do most ladies get growth u/s?  Wonder why I haven't....

No, there are lots of women that don't.  I'm getting one because I was measuring ahead at both my 26w and 28w appointments and they want to make sure that the baby is a normal size.

  • My best friend had a c-section 8 days early because they estimated the baby was well over 10lb 8oz; the baby came out at 8lb6oz. They can be off.

  • DD was 2 weeks late & at 40w they said she was already 8lb2oz. She was born at 42w 6lb15oz
  • With my first my doc was concerned at 38 wks that he was measuring ahead so she sent me for a growht u/s. They estimated over 8 lb at 38 wk. He was born at 41 wks ( 3 weeks later!) and wasn't even 8 lb.
  • Mine was way off.  I had a growth u/s with DD at 34 weeks and they said she was 6 pounds and a few ounces.  At 35w4d she was born due to pPROM and she weighed 5 pounds 1 ounce.  So yea...  not accurate.
  • my doctor said they are really accurate between 7-8lbs and anything over that it can be really off. I personally, will not take any estimate as truth. Estimates can be off both directions up or down.

My mom had 4 children all 9+ lbs and I was her smallest at 9lbs. When she had my little brother, the doctor and nurses all said he was going to be a little one and then he ended up being 9lbs 13 oz.

The baby's size really doesn't matter that much though. The baby will usually be made to fit the mom under most and normal circumstances. It is extremely rare for the baby to not fit mom.

One point brought up at my hypnobabies class was that babies are mostly fat and very squishy so even if the baby is large, it should squish through just fine.

  • I had a gowth scan 3 days before I delivered and they told me baby was measuring 6.5 pounds. She was 6lbs 2oz at birth. It all depends on th quality if the machine and the skill level of the person taking the measurements.
  • Both my boys were measured by their dr or mw & both measured about 7 1/2 lbs --- they were both 9+ lbs.

  • I had a growth u/s at 35 weeks. They estimated her to be at 6 1/2 lbs the dr told me I would probably have around an 8 1/2 lb baby. She was born 2 days early and weighed 9lbs 4 oz. I had her naturally with the help of an epidural. Was my first baby and wont be my last so it wasnt to bad : )

But on the note of it being wrong a girl I know had her growth us at like 36 weeks. They said the baby was 6lbs 7 oz. She was induced on her due date and the baby weighed 6lbs 12 ozs . And guess what the same ultra sound tech did both of our ultra sounds Wink

  • The estimate was very inaccurate for me. The guess was my son was a 7 pounder and he was born 9lbs 4oz. My sister was induced for interuterine growth restriction and her daughter was estimated at under 5 pounds and was 7lbs 5oz. I've heard lots of stories of the estimates being off the other way too. I wouldn't be too stressed about it.

The only reason I have monthly growth scans is to monitor the twins for twin-twin transfusion syndrome and make sure they're thriving in utero. So far, so good. The estimated weights aren't really what my OB is after, it's just to make sure they're both growing at the same rate.

  • I've alwasy broken to mold in everything I do.  My Dr. estimated DS at 7.8lbs at 38 weeks.  I delivered him (no induction) at 38.5 weeks and he was 8lbs 12oz and 21 1/2 inches.  Quite a bit bigger than they estimated.
  • i'd like to echo everyone else's comments about their inaccuracy. i'm sure sometimes they are accurate, but it may just be an accident. last tuesday i had a growth u/s that said our little guy was already over 9 lbs at 37 weeks. i had a followup this morning and a week later, mysteriously he's lost a half pound. the md said he was predicting 8.5 lbs now and the tech said 7 lbs 10 oz. i asked your very same question about a week ago in 0-3 and the estimates were all over the place.

don't let them freak you out. my doctor was ooto last week so i saw a different one and she was already trying to schedule me for a c-section and seemed like she was going out of her way to try to frighten me about his size. it's not right. i'm seeing my regular dr tomorrow, but the md in the prenatal lab said that my baby is not outlandishly large and they'll be able to tell during labor if i really need a section. in fact, he wants us to let him know how close he was after i deliver.
