I had a 33 week u/s and my OB said baby is measuring at 5 pounds 10 ounces. At an average weight gain of half a pound a week we'll have a 9+ pound baby on our hands *shudder*
I'm wondering for those of you who already have children, how accurate were your OB's when estimating birth weight?
TIA!
Re: Estimated Weight vs. Actual Weight
I've never had a growth u/s (not with DS or with this LO), so I can't really say. But, I do read on here often that those things tend to over estimate baby's weight by up to a pound or more!
Do most ladies get growth u/s? Wonder why I haven't....
No, there are lots of women that don't. I'm getting one because I was measuring ahead at both my 26w and 28w appointments and they want to make sure that the baby is a normal size.

my doctor said they are really accurate between 7-8lbs and anything over that it can be really off. I personally, will not take any estimate as truth. Estimates can be off both directions up or down.
My mom had 4 children all 9+ lbs and I was her smallest at 9lbs. When she had my little brother, the doctor and nurses all said he was going to be a little one and then he ended up being 9lbs 13 oz.
The baby's size really doesn't matter that much though. The baby will usually be made to fit the mom under most and normal circumstances. It is extremely rare for the baby to not fit mom.
One point brought up at my hypnobabies class was that babies are mostly fat and very squishy so even if the baby is large, it should squish through just fine.
Both my boys were measured by their dr or mw & both measured about 7 1/2 lbs --- they were both 9+ lbs.
I had a growth u/s at 35 weeks. They estimated her to be at 6 1/2 lbs the dr told me I would probably have around an 8 1/2 lb baby. She was born 2 days early and weighed 9lbs 4 oz. I had her naturally with the help of an epidural. Was my first baby and wont be my last so it wasnt to bad : )
But on the note of it being wrong a girl I know had her growth us at like 36 weeks. They said the baby was 6lbs 7 oz. She was induced on her due date and the baby weighed 6lbs 12 ozs . And guess what the same ultra sound tech did both of our ultra sounds

The only reason I have monthly growth scans is to monitor the twins for twin-twin transfusion syndrome and make sure they're thriving in utero. So far, so good. The estimated weights aren't really what my OB is after, it's just to make sure they're both growing at the same rate.
i'd like to echo everyone else's comments about their inaccuracy. i'm sure sometimes they are accurate, but it may just be an accident. last tuesday i had a growth u/s that said our little guy was already over 9 lbs at 37 weeks. i had a followup this morning and a week later, mysteriously he's lost a half pound. the md said he was predicting 8.5 lbs now and the tech said 7 lbs 10 oz. i asked your very same question about a week ago in 0-3 and the estimates were all over the place.
don't let them freak you out. my doctor was ooto last week so i saw a different one and she was already trying to schedule me for a c-section and seemed like she was going out of her way to try to frighten me about his size. it's not right. i'm seeing my regular dr tomorrow, but the md in the prenatal lab said that my baby is not outlandishly large and they'll be able to tell during labor if i really need a section. in fact, he wants us to let him know how close he was after i deliver.
