2nd Trimester

Weird hot, dizzy, light-headed, ears ringing, blurry vision episodes

I keep having these weird "episodes" where I get a hot flash, feel all dizzy and light-headed, my ears ring and my vision gets blurry.  I have had them both up and moving around and also just sitting in my chair at work.  I'm not sure what's going on.

The first time it happened, I called the doctor and she said to go to the hospital.  They did blood work, took a urine sample and did an ultrasound and everything checked out.  They did say that it looks like I have placenta previa, but that hopefully that will resolve in the next month or so and that wasn't necessarily what was causing my problems.

Anyone have anything similar?  I've also been having some abdominal pains, though I went in for those when they were pretty severe and the doctor didn't seem to think it was anything to worry about.  I just generally feel achy all over my pelvic area with jabs of pain every now and then.  They said it was probably the "ever present" round ligament pain.

I'm mainly wondering if anyone had the kind of hot, dizzy, faint feelings episodes I described above.

 Any thoughts are appreciated!

 Thanks!

Erin

  • Random high blood pressure?  Were you still experiencing the symptoms when you got to the ER?  I'm assuming they took your BP...was it elevated?

  • The hot, dizzy fainting episodes sound exactly like the symptoms I have shortly before I have a low blood sugar seizure.  I'm not epileptic, but if I allow my blood sugar to drop too low, I have fainting spells and seizures - and have had this since I was in high school so for me, not a prego thing.  However, your blood chemistry may have changed significantly enough to cause this.  I would try keeping apple juice on hand and any time you start to feel that way, drink a full glass of it and see if that doesn't "bring you back around".  I would also be making sure that I didn't allow myself to get too hungry - eat small high protein & carbohydrate snacks throughout the day like trailmix.  Trust me, you don't want to be out somewhere and have this happen or worse, be driving.

  • They said my blood sugar was fine, and my BP wasn't elevated when they took it once I got to the hospital. It truly seems a mystery.
  • Are you standing up too fast? Sometimes, when I get up really fast from sitting, I get dizzy and light headed and my vision gets a little blurry and it lasts about a minute.

I don't think that's it.  These last anywhere from 5-15 minutes, and a couple of times it's happened when I've just been sitting in my chair at work, not even standing up nor had I been standing up or moving around recently.

  • Everything you are describing sounds like everything that happens prior to passing out.

Is there a chance you are having PG related palpitations and just do not know it? A couple people I know have passed out from them w/o knowing about the palpitations. They are not anything life threatening though(just do you don't freak out at the thought). My Dr informed me it is because of the increased volume of blood pumping through and your heart working a little harder.

If not then watch what you are eating. If you are not eating well rounded meals you are bound to pass out.

Start writing stuff down to notice a pattern.

  • Not to scare you or anything but I had those symptoms about a week before I got diagnosed with Pre-E when I was pregnant with my first baby.

I'm not saying it's Pre-E, I just thought I'd let you know what happened when I experienced those symptoms. I hope it's nothing serious and that it passes quickly for you.

    Good Luck!

  • Hello,  all of your symptoms, abdominal pain, dizziness, ringing in the ears, blurred vision and feeling faint can be symptoms of Preeclampsia.  But you did say your BP and Urine came back normal so I am really confused.  Just keep track of when this happens, maybe a journal and bring it to your doctor's attention.  If your gut is telling you something may be up, don't ignore it.  The only other thing I can think of is to check and see if you are anemic?
  • There's always the possibility of dehydration as well.  I know you said everything came back normal, but I agree that those symptoms sound like issues with preeclampsia or at least some kind of blood sugar or blood pressure issue.  Good luck, eat healthy, drink lots of water, rest as much as you can and hopefully that feeling will go away.
  • I'm a bit late to the discussion but this has happened to me on several occasions.  My blood pressure and urine were fine so the doctor tested me for anemia - which came back positive.  So I have to take iron pills twice a day even though I'm only in the second trimester.  Do you recall if they tested you for anemia?

    Good luck...

Not sure if they tested for that.  I'd hope they would have, but can't say for sure.  I'll ask the Dr.  Thanks for all the thoughts and advice ladies!
