Opinions on lunch meat??

I've been reading about everyone going to Subway and enjoying sandwiches today... I want nothing more than a cold turkey sandwich!!!  I keep reading about the risk of infection and the severe consequences and it's freaking me out.  I've been having dreams about going to the grocery store... going to the deli... ordering a pound of turkey... then a go to cash out and someone has taken my turkey so I have to do it over again.  I never get the sandwich- not even in my dreams!

I know the chances of getting bad lunch meat are very slim, but I feel so guilty.  And heating the meat in the microwave and waiting for it to cool sounds disgusting.  I just want a sandwich.

Re: Opinions on lunch meat??

  • Gotta be honest, I am sitting here eating Subway turkey right now.Embarrassed

I say go for it personally. Oh, Subway does toast, so that may help if the thought of the microwave grosses you out. I personally like it cold.

  • I spoke to my OB about this and a few other foods yesterday in my checkup. He said do not worry about lunch meats, just make sure they have been properly refridgerated. He only recommended staying away from lunch meat if it had been sitting out at room temp for a while, then stay away. But properly refrigerated lunch meat in moderation is fine. He also said the same about tuna, and caffiene. Moderation is key.

  • I plan to steer clear of lunch meat, though as with everything else in pregnancy, it's a personal decision and you should do whatever you're comfortable with.

  • I have indulged in a deli sandwich now and then just dont't eat them if the meat or the istituition seems off to you. I won't eat it at home after the first couple days after buying it.

  • I've been heating any lunch meat I eat (when work buys sandwiches and no one knows you're pregnant it's hard to have much control other than to a) hope it's toasted already or b) pop it into the microwave and say you're turning it into a turkey melt).

I've had two Subway BLT's this week and I had them microwave the bacon and toast the sandwich.  I don't know if bacon is at risk or not but that's what I did.

  • With DD I ate Subway a lot! It was one of the very few things I could keep down. She's perfectly fine.
  • I have no intention of avoiding lunchmeat. Not that I eat a ton of it in the first place.

  • I eat lunchmeat all the time.  My nurse practitioner told me that the official recommendation is not to eat it, but the only people she's ever know to get listeria in her 30 years of practicing got it from raw milk products (and even then, only 2 people!).  I just can't bring myself to worry about it.  I wouldn't eat if it is was sitting out or from a gas station or something, but I feel totally comfortable with subway.

But if you're going to eat it and then feel bad, it might not be worth it.

  • My doctor told me the biggest thing to avoid is unpasteurized cheese, and in turn, meat that shares a deli case with unpasteurized cheese. So, Subway is A-ok in her book. She is currently pregnant and eats Subway all the time, in her words.

Do be careful of the current lunchmeat recall for Walmart stores.

  • I've eaten Subway almost once a week since my BFP and I don't get my sandwich toasted, I think it's gross. I wouldn't eat gas station sandwiches or those premade sandwiches in the grocery store and at the Target snack stand. I also wouldn't eat anything that's been sitting out, but other than that I think it's fine.

    This

im a huge fan of Jimmy Johns!  i only do it every couple of weeks though

  • Don't risk it. Lunchmeat gets recalled ALL the time due to listerosis. 11 people died in my province (Canadian) while I was pregnant with my son. Your immune system is weaker while pregnant so that your body doesn't attack the baby; so while hubby could eat infected meat and be fine you might not be. Chances are it's fine, but I'd have a glass of wine before deli meat. Google Maple Leaf meat recall, and keep in mind that they are one of the biggest and safest packers, then see if you still crave it. Not trying to be a jerk at all, but seriously it will put you off of it so quickly.

  • I still eat it and have no plans to boycott Subway for 9 months.  As long as it's a reputable and clean establishment I see no need to avoid it.

  • I was eating it.  I admit the recalls freaked me and I decided it wasn't worth it.

  • My OB said lunchmeat is fine as long as the place you get it from looks clean and as long as it's from a whole piece of meat, like roast beef or a turkey breast. She did say to avoid stuff that has been chopped and reprocessed, like baloney or some kinds of ham.

Personally I think I can live without lunchmeat for the next ~6 months, I think. I usually have leftovers for lunch anyway. Might break down and get some roast beef at some point though, it's my favorite.

  • I enjoy my foot long turkey on wheat with everything at least 3 times a week.

  • I was super anal about lunch meat with DD, until I started having problems with low blood sugar (dizzy, seeing spots, cold sweats, etc.). My midwife told me to make sure I eat plenty of protein, and said that lunch meat was not something to be overly concerned about. With this pregnancy I've been a lot more lax- I had Jimmy Johns last night!
