My son just turned 5. School starts on Monday, the 30th. Some of his classmates could turn 6 in the next few weeks. He will be an entire year younger than them. Thoughts?
I really don't think it matters, honestly. I think it depends mostly on the individual child, and then whether or not they've had time away from parents/in a structured setting before.
I am not obsessing. It's just really boring at work today. I already made the decision and am fine with it. I just had no idea so many people were so against it.
My ds just started kindergarten and will be 6 y/o in a few weeks. But, that's just totally normal around here. I believe that our state has the earliest cut-off date in the nation so most kindergartners tend to be older.
In the long run, I really don't think it matters. I have a late bday and started school on time. I was average most of my life, which is fine with me. By middle school and high school, age had nothing to do with ability in school. And, it's really hard to say whether age has anything to do with overall success. Maybe me having to work harder in school paid off in college and grad school? Maybe it just comes down to personality, which has nothing to do with age.
My son has a late birthday but I put him in school according to the cut-off so there are children in his class that are 1 year or more older than him. It really doesn't matter. There is always going to be younger and older, taller and shorter kids in each class no matter when you start them. My son is entering 5th grade this year and he has never had a problem being one of the younger ones. I really wouldn't put anymore thought into it.
Where I live you don't even have to be 5 until December when starting K, so there are 4 yo. It would be stranger to have so many six yo. beginning K. 5 is normal.
I also think younger kids have a little advantage when they enter the working world. A whole extra year to earn wages b/c they're not still in school. Although, if I was graduating today, I'd probably wish I could stay in school another year and not have to look for a job in this market.

what the hell kind of advantages are afforded to anyone in kindergarten? muscling their way to the primo crayons?
come on.
The studies are mixed, since a lot of kids who are "red shirted" have learning issues, it is hard to get a clear picture.
