3rd Trimester

Placenta still low-lying?

I just had a follow up ultrasound (Thanks lissa, for warning me it would be the dildo cam!) and while my placenta moved up, it's still considered "low-lying".  The doctor said it moved from 1.9cm to 2.7cm away from the cervix.  I have to go back for yet another ultrasound in 4 weeks.

Anyone know how many cm is no longer considered low-lying?

Re: Placenta still low-lying?

  • I think it depends where you are, but I was looking it up yesterday on the Society of Ob/Gyn of Canada and their clinical guidelines indicate that 20 mm (or 2.0 cm) from the placenta to the os (cervical opening) is placenta previa and they don't provide a definition for "low-lying".

From my understanding, you still have a good number of weeks to go and it is moving in the right direction. :) The bottom portion of the uterus is supposed to grow in the third trimester, and that should help the placenta move away from the cervix.

Good luck!!! At 25 weeks, I was 3.4 cm and I am getting checked at 34 weeks just to be safe.

  • I was told at 21 weeks that I had a low-lying placenta and then at my 33 week u/s he said that it had moved into the right place, no problems.  I would say that if it's moving in the right direction and you still have 11 weeks left you should be in the clear!
  • Did you ask your doctor what the cut-off is? I'm sure if depends, I had a low-lying placenta with my first pg, and it had moved up enough by about 32 weeks - 27 is still early, so I wouldn't be too worried.

I get my u/s done at the hospital, so it's only the tech and "their doctor" who was very fast to get me out.  I fully intend on asking my doctor these questions when she calls me.  Being the lack of patient girl that I am, I've been trying to find the answers via google and you lovely ladies in the meantime :)

My peri told me they need it at least 2 cm away to consider labor plus vaginal delivery, so I'm not sure why they would have you rescanned since it's already far enough away.

I was diagnosed low lying at 18 weeks (.45 cm), then at 28 weeks with marginal previa.

Then at 35 weeks, I was totally cleared!!  My placenta and cervix are like 5 cm away from each other, so keep the faith!!

Also, my doctor told me that once it moved away there was no medical way for it to move back, so you're on the right path!!

Thanks Beanie!  Good to know!  At the last ultrasound, they said they like to see the placenta being 2.5cm away from the cervix, so I was very confused as to why 2.7cm was still low-lying!

ah - didn't mean to come off as snotty! Yeah, that's weird that your placenta is further away than the cut-off...I know mine was right at the edge of the cut-off, but the doctor said that it would only move further away, so no need for more u/s to check. I would definitely be asking at the next appt - good luck.
