poll: education

Just curious - what are you planning on doing for your LO's K-12 education?

Re: poll: education

  • I voted for public school, based on $$$. Any chance of private went out the window the minute we saw that second heartbeat lol! Stick out tongue But I think a public school education can be just as good as private (depending on the school), so it doesn't really bother me.

  • I agree re. finding a fantastic public school. I was flicking through a Melbourne Child magazine issue on schools and I checked out how much each private school cost (they listed everythinggggg each school offered too, it was awesome) and my eyes BUGGED out of my head at the yearly fees, omfg!

Alternative schools (Montessori etc) were featured too and I am pretty interested in checking these ones out too. There's one school I saw that is like a farm. It teaches kids the basics, like math, english, science etc etc but it also includes horseriding, looking after the animals etc ...hang on, lemmie go find it...

    Ahhh, here it is:

    https://www.villageschool.vic.edu.au/index.htm

This type of teaching really appeals to me, not to mention the wide, rural open spaces the kids get to run around in. This school isn't cheap either, it looks to be almost $8,000 a year (rounded up) but it's better than the private school fees I saw.

ETA: Each state has their own version of the aforementioned magazine. Sydney's Child has their own Education Issue too. If you haven't had a look at the mag, it's really worth picking up a copy as I find it an amazing resource.

  • we've yet to decide. still need to figure out if we're putting her in preschool or not since neither of us went to preschool ourselves!

i think it will depend on where we live and the availability of good public schools. i went to public schools all the way through but had the benefit of some really good public schools in CA.  both DH and his sister went to private schools for HS, to the tune of about 20-30K per year!!

  • DH and I are both from small towns, no private schools to speak of.  We now live in a small-ish town that has pretty good public schools I think.  Unfortunately we live 2 streets over from the district that is considered "the best" but I haven't heard anything bad about the one we live in (there is a 3rd that seems to be considered not as good).

That said - I am really impressed by the daycare "school" that Jack goes to now and they have a religious private school for K-12 (it's non-religious for the daycare/preschool portion). So when the time comes we may look into that more.

I also wouldn't rule out a private arts or highly capable school (around here they have some for middle and high school) if our children show signs that something like that would benefit them.  The one type I don't think I'm interested in is Waldorf but to each their own...

DH and everyone in his family did go to a very good Montessori preschool and pre-k so we will probably do the same - but not before really looking into the preschool w/in Jack's current daycare because I hear good things about it too.

  • I voted for Charter schools, but I am not sure if Charter schools are the same in NOLA as they are everywhere else.  Before the storm, we only had Magnet schools (my understanding...it was a public school you had to test into) Now post-K, we have Charter schools which are run by the local universities.  All of the ones we have so far are really great schools (Tulane's Lusher school has been named one of the best in the country!  Very rare for New Orleans!!).  Unfortunately, we are not in Lusher's district, but they are building another Charter school very close to our house & we have all of our eggs in that basket.  As long as that is a good school our kids will go there for K-8...both DH & I went to Catholic highschool so it is possible our kids may go to a private/Catholic highschool, but we shall see.  It is quite expensive here too!

  • I am a very strong advocate of public schools.  I may get flamed for this, but in general, I am not a fan of private schools at all.  I understand their necessity in certain areas, however, I really feel that if people put their money and energy into making our public schools better, there would be no need for private schools (except maybe religious ones).

You've got to realize my perspective, though. I teach in a public school, which is in a very low income area, but is a truly excellent school district.  And where I grew up (a small town), the private schools were considered a much lower quality than the public.  They were much smaller, and didn't attract very good teachers.  They only existed for the very religious.  What people outside of education often don't realize is that (here in the U.S. anyway), private school teachers usually make much, much less than public school teachers.  Therefore, unless it's a fancy-pants very expensive private school (which there are a few around here), or unless the teacher is there for their own religion or beliefs, many of the teachers there are the ones that couldn't get hired by the public schools.  Just something to think about!

Obviously, we will be sending our children to public school all the way!

  • given that we just bought a house - and had chosen our neighborhood based strictly on the schools - we're going public for K-12. MH and I both went to public schools (though I started out in private, until we moved to a better district in 4th grade).

there's a small chance we would do the international school (more charter school-ish) for 6-12, but we shall see - depends on how the schools are doing by then, whether we apply, and whether our kids get in.  either way, it's still public and considered part of our district.

we're very fortunate to be able to afford to buy in a district whose high schools are consistently rated among the top in the country (at least, per us news Stick out tongue).  if we had stayed in our townhouse, we'd do private school.

very interesting poll.  i think about this a lot, b/c our (new) neighborhood is VERY asian.  the elementary school is over 50% asian (east asian + indian) Indifferent  i'm not sure I like that (though i know it's worse in some places in the bay area!), and that percentage is only going up.  (imo) it's the best set of elementary/middle/high schools in the district...but i sometimes wonder whether this was the right choice.  that said, it's done, this is where we live now, we'll see.  a lot can change in even the next 5 years, before this LO starts kindergarten!  Smile

eta: i do plan to look at montessori or montessori-like schools for preschool.  but starting K, it's public all the way...

    Oooooh Tina thanks for this!

I'm interested in alternative (like Montessori) schools as well, but I don't think we'd be able to afford them for both boys. Sad I also don't think there are any in our area, so we'd have to board them in Sydney or something and I don't think I want that kind of separation.

  • Public... I went to private school, but DH went to public. We bought a house in a good school district specifically so that our kids can go to public school!!

This. So I voted for the last option since we're also still undecided.

  • Public all the way!  Iowa is known for it's excellence in education and I have complete faith in the public school system here.  Private schools are extremely rare (aside from the religious shcools) and pretty much everyone we know goes to public here.
  • My answer is going to be a bit one sided. I teach at a public school so yes LO will be going to public schools. I often get very agrivated when public schools get a bad rap. I will say as long as you are involved in your childs education and don't expect that the teacher will do everything nothings wrong with public.
