Baby's Dream "Safety Gate" Cribs?

Anyone own a Baby's Dream Safety Gate Crib where the top 6-9 inches fold down?

Re: Baby's Dream "Safety Gate" Cribs?

  • I don't own one of these cribs, but the store where we bought our furniture carried this line, so I got to see it in person.  It is very nice quality.  I don't know if you own a copy of Baby Bargains, but the book also gave the brand high ratings but ONLY for the cribs without the dropsides.   They make a point to mention they DO NOT suggest any cribs with dropsides. I honestly wouldn't buy a dropside crib as there are safety issues, but that's entirely up to you.

  • I've never heard of this brand before but I would have to agree with the previous commenter, I wouldn't purchase a dropside or anything that has folding parts.

  • Baby's Dream is a good brand, but I would carefully consider whether you really need a drop-sided crib.  The federal government recently recommended banning the sale of all drop-sided cribs (starting in 2011 or 2012?) because they are considered a safety hazard.

You might want to look for a crib that is lower to the ground that you can reach into easily, if you think that a standard height crib will be problematic for you.

  • We have this crib, we haven't assembled it as of yet but we saw the one at the store. This is a safety gate crib not one of the recalled drop side cribs that are dangerous. This crib doesn't actually drop down on the side.

  • We just bought one in Legendary. The "safety gate" is not at all the same as the drop side cribs that have been banned. If you get the same brand crib without the safety gate it's just lower to the ground. The safety gate gives you an extra few inches of height. I liked the extra height on the crib and they are very nicely made IMO. The folding part on the inside of the crib has a space where finger's can't be pinched also. I would recommend looking at it in person to see if it's right for you. It helps me because I'm really short.

  • This crib is not a drop side crib.  A samall section of the crib folds down to get baby out.  I personally wouldn't get a crib with this feature.

My SIL has one and her LO learned how to unlatch it and clib out!!!

This is the part I worried about- that is what the Baby Bargains book said but when I looked at them in store, you have to push in both lever things on two sides of the crib in order for it to be lowered.  I can't fathom how a child could do this.

  • We got this crib about 6 years ago when my daughter was born and will be reusing it this time around.  I loved it.  There is only a small portion that drops down and you have to push in on both the right and left side at the same time to make it flip down.  There is no way a child could unlatch it unless they have adult size arms to stretch the length of the crib and are as strong as bam bam.

Baby's Dream is a great brand name.  This crib then did convert to a toddler bed, which we did and eventually could be turned into a full-size bed.

I am not sure how she did it but she did manage to get the safety gate part down!

  • We have one of these cribs and investigated it thoroughly...many trips to the store to test it out. They are high quality cribs and the people who sold us ours stand behind them. These are not drop-side cribs by any means....you must unlatch 2 sides of the gate to open it and the hinge for the safety gate is fastened on by a piano hinge. It is designed to prevent finger pinches and we tried every imaginable way to do it and even watched some little kids playing with it. IMO this is an excellent crib and very sturdy wood (my husband and the salesman state on the floor model to demonstrate how truly sturdy it was).

If you are thinking about this crib, you should definitely go to a store with it and look at it and investigate it yourself. Don't always listen to what others tell you.

  • I could not imagine a child being able to open the safety-gate. I have one from Baby's Dream and there is no way my child could do it. Maybe the mom forgot to latch the side after putting her LO in it?

I agree with PP that you should go check them out. It's a great crib, very sturdy. I've never had an issue with mine and DS now is in the toddler bed.  The safety-gate is a great feature that really helps when you drop the mattress too. It's not just to reach a baby. Imagine laying a 20lb baby down into the lowest setting. These cribs have a very low mattress setting, which is great for extending the life of the crib, but if you're a shorter mom or have back problems, when lay a sleeping 20lb baby down you'll feel like you're falling in with him.

  • We are considering this crib for our baby. My husband and I really like the Ocean model. He is super tall and I'm super short so using a standard height crib just doesn't seem realistic for me. After reading the Baby Bargains book I'm a bit skeptical, however, the concern was not the child opening the crib themselves but getting a foot up into the beveled hinge and climbing out. Someone reported that their child broke their leg after hoisting themselves out of the crib. Honestly, after thinking about it nonstop and also hearing about the child who managed to unlatch the gate herself...I think that it might possibly have been a good time for the crib to be converted to the toddler bed anyway. Not judging (as this will be my first), but I think that if the crib mattress were in the lowest position and the child could somehow manage to get their foot up that high then they might be too big for a crib. Just my thoughts and I'm so glad someone brought up this product line. Its been very difficult to find any good reviews.
