1st Trimester

first appt- not that great

Well I finally had my first appointment this morning.   The doctor couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler, so now I am scheduled for an ultrasound this afternoon.   The doctor told me not to worry because it's still so small and is hard to find- but I'm still a wreck.

  • Try not to worry too much, my OB said they don't even try to hear the heart beat before 12 weeks.  We saw it on the u/s at 9 1/2 weeks though.

    Good luck in any case.

  • I agree about trying not to worry. My OB said they don't even try the doppler until 12 weeks because it makes women unnecessarily nervous. Good luck!
  • It's hard not to worry, but like the others said it's totally normal not to be able to hear the heartbeat on the doppler at 9 weeks.  Hope the u/s goes well this afternoon!

  • My sister was ten weeks along and they were unable to find it on the doppler.  They sent her for an ultrasound the following day and there it was on the screen.  They said her uterus was tilted and that is why they probably had trouble finding it.  And on a positive note, she got the u/s pictures to bring home, too!  She went back at 12 w and they found it no problem.

Good luck and try not to worry!

  • I know it's hard not to worry, but your doc is right--it's tricky to say exactly when it can be heard.  Couldn't hear my son until like 16 wks!
  • Thank you so much everyone- you truly helped me feel better.  I am trying to keep it together for the next 2 hours.

  • This just happened to me on Monday.  I was 11 weeks, 3 days on Monday, and the dr. couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler.  I got in that afternoon for an ultrasound, and there the baby was ... squirming and flipping around.  I don't think the doppler heartbeat location is an exact science, and it seems the earlier it is, the harder it can be to find.  So don't worry!  You will know for sure soon enough.

  • Try not to worry (Easier said than done, right :)

The same thing happened with my DS. I was right around 12 weeks and my Doc couldn't find the HB with the doppler. Then, he sent me in for an US and there he was! Just fine. But, I think until they get a little bigger it can be hard to locate it with the Doppler.
