  • seriously?? i thought it was more like 10-11!!
  • I'm sure there are books that say what STTN is, but that is just a number someone decided on.  I think everyone probably has a different idea about what that means to them.  For us, I considered LO to be sleeping through the night when he started consistently sleeping 6-7 hour stretches.  That's a fairly good night's sleep in our house (and luckily he usually nurses and then goes right back down for another 2-3 hours!).

  • I consider between 10-12 hours straight to be STTN.

DS2 sleeps for 8 hours, gets up to nurse and then sleeps another 3-4 hours. I do not consider him STTN yet.

  • I know people say 5-6, but to me it's 8.

  • at DD's 2 month ped appt, dr said 5+hr stretch is considered STTN.   Right now DD is doing about 8-9, i consider that STTN, but i guess it varies from person to person
  • I think 5 or 6 "counts" but I count it as going to sleep at the same time as his big sister and getting up when or after I get up.

  • As far as I'm concerned its not really STTN unless they sleep from the time you put them to bed until morning. A baby in this age category is capable of sleeping for 10-12 hours a night.

This....DS goes down at 8:30-9pm and wakes at 6:30-7- I count that as STTN but sometimes he wakes at 4am to feed and then goes back down- those nights I don't figure that he STTN.

  • The first night DD slept for 6 hours straight I considered ot STTN. She slept from 10:30 to 4:30 and it was heaven!!!

Now she sleeps from 8:00 to 7:00... I call that just lucky!

I also agree. I definitely don't consider 5-6 hours STTN - my LO goes down around 9, and that would mean she was waking around 2-3 am - I don't think that's "through the night" at all!

damn. Then as an adult, I never STTN! I only sleep about 8 hours max ;)

Honeslty it depends. When DD was smaller, I said the technical 6 hours because it seemed like heaven to me. Now, its if she sleeps during "normal" sleeping hours.

  • I agree with the previous posters - if they are down from the time you put them in bed until normal waking hours (which is anywhere from 6-7 for us) then that is sttn.  DD goes down from anywhere between 8-10 and is up by 6-7 so if she doesnt wake up between those hours its sttn.
  • The medical definition is 5 hours.

I read somewhere recently that it's not normal developmentally for children to sleep a traditional full night without waking for some reason until closer to 18 months.
