3rd Trimester

Have you had a lot of ultrasounds during your pregnancy?

And does it make you nervous?  I had a lot of ultrasounds and now I think about it impacting DD.  Anyone else?

Re: Have you had a lot of ultrasounds during your pregnancy?

  • I've had about ten and I have one more coming up in two weeks.  Not too worried about it from what I've heard the 3D/4D are worst.

  • Yes, and I hate it! Especially since the studies that show the ill effects of having u/s's are worse on males than females. I've had 4 so far, all "medically necessary" and I have to go in again tomorrow for another one. I'm high-risk, since I've already had two babies early and have been in L&D three times for contractions with this one. Not that I don't love to see my LO, but I worry that it's affecting his cells, his intestines, his brain, and whether he's going to be left or right handed.
  • I've had 5 so far with 1-2 more coming. Mine were all necessary (not elective) and they don't worry me at all.
  • I have had MANY with all three. There have been no ill-effects on my children, and there are no studies that hold any weight that conclude that ultrasound is dangerous.
  • Yes, I have had a bunch (at least 10). Other than the NT scan at 12 weeks, they have all  been to monitor diagnosed problems (large ovarian cyst and polyhydramnios), so I don't feel that they have been frivolous. It was more important to make sure that everything was going ok than to worry about the possibility that ultrasound might be bad for the baby.

I did my research in the beginning and was unable to find any definitive studies that demonstrated negative effects from ultrasounds. I think more research should be done, but had to worry about immediate problems with my pregnancy rather than unproven speculations. Still, one thing that makes me feel better is that I only had 1 ultrasound in 1st tri (at 12 weeks).

  • Tomorrow will be my 17th ultrasound. I was being watched every 4 weeks which changed to once a week (at 28 weeks) for my high blood pressure. Then two weeks ago we discovered LO has a abnormal sized belly and we have one every Monday and Thursday. I dont think it bothers him at all!

  • I had 6 with DD#1 and she's totally healthy and perfect, I just had my 4th with this baby (will likely have 5 total) and I'm not worried at all.

  • I think I've had 10 or so.  I'm high risk with the twins, so they're keeping a close eye on them.  Having several ultrasounds doesn't bother me at all. I'm having another one tomorrow and I can't wait to see how the boys look and how much they weigh.  As a PP said, there's nothing definitive about them causing harm to the LOs.

  • With DS I had 3 (most have 2 -8 weeks and 18 weeks - with singletons where I live, but since I have a cleft we did another 3D at 28 weeks).

I've had 6 so far since I am having twins:
    8 week u/s
    12 week u/s
    12 1/2 week u/s
    18 week u/s
    24 week u/s
    25 week u/s

I should have a few more to check their growth and make sure they aren't having any problems growing.

I haven't given it a single thought as to if it could cause them ill-effects.  IMO if your doctor recommends it for some reason - twins, health problems for mom or baby, or just to check something to make sure all is well - it's probably worth it.

  • I'm a sonographer.  There are very few studies that have shown any promising, CREDIBLE results when using the parameters a sonographer would use during a routine OB scan.  Basically an increase in the number of left handed babies is being attributed to US, as hilarious as that sounds.  There are definitely negative bioeffects that have been shown due to US, but the parameters are not the same as with a diagnostic OB US.  These use amplitudes, power, and frequencies that are much stronger.  So basically....rest easy.  Your LO will be fine, just enjoy getting those little glimpses of her!

And the 3D/4D being bad is from untrained technicians who do not properly know how to work the machines such as those that may be found in non-medical settings as are popping up these days.

I'm involved in a study and have had many.

  • I've only had 3 total, so I'm not too worried.

2 doctor scheduled standard US and 1 4D US.

  • I've had 5 u/s one was an elective which was good but a waste of money. I have maybe 2-3 more coming since my pregnancy is consider "high risk" due to my HBP but we shall see!
  • I had 3 in first tri due to two prior missed miscarriages, then one at 21 wks, one at 28wks due to my belly measuring large, then two more growth u/s at 36 and 38wks. I'm scheduled for another u/s with a NST on Monday if I haven't delivered by then. I've also used a home doppler in my pregnancy to ease my mind, but for very brief periods at a point with several days in between. My office has extremely new equipment and all of their techs have been with the office for at least 10yrs. I feel at this point they trust the technology and would not do anything they would suspect could cause more damage

  • I have had an ultrasound every appointment since I was 30 weeks. LO is a little smaller so they like to check every time to make sure she is on her schedule. I love getting them, it's nice seeing LO. I have not heard of it effecting LO. I don't think doctors would do so many if there was a HUGE effect.

Thanks, Mrs. Wright. It's so nice to hear an expert voice of reason on this issue every once in a while.

  • I've had three so far. Not sure if they plan on doing one more to see her size and position before delivery. Not worried at all.

  • I'll have my 5th on Friday, all medically necessary and I have no qualms about any of them.  I'd rather rest-assured knowing that baby is a-ok than worrying about the what-ifs of what a so-called "study" says may happen.

  • I've had about 10 now and I'm not worried at all.  there was a post about this a few weeks back and I asked my us doc about it.  I'm considered high risk so I go to a really well known high risk practice in downtown boston and my ultrasounds are always done by docs (not technicians).  I asked both this question and they both said that the only potential risk that any studies may have shown is the risk of using a doppler in the first trimester and most of them do not do that anymore.  The standard ultrasound that most of us use has been considered so safe that they are not even subject to the same regulations that they once were.   yet most still follow those regulations.  anyway, all of this comes down to, of all the things to worry about with pregnancy - this shouldn't be high on the list (if on the list at all).

Glad I can help.  There's a ton of misinformation out there.

  • I've only had 1 so far at 20 weeks and I'm 28 weeks now. The 1st was to find out the gender & etc which was standard and also done in 3D/4D. I guess I won't have another one until I'm closer to my due date.
  • I've had one at

     8 wks,

    12wks,

    19 wks,

    21 wks,

    and

    36wks.

I'm not worried that they affected the baby at all.
