Anyone considering moving once LO arrives?

We're half the country away from most of our family and have been considering making the move back to Texas from Cali. when LO arrives.  OUr lifestyle here is good, and the weather in northern cali.. well it's not usually much higher than 80s in the summer, but we're looking at the impact of being nearer to our families and how that may affect LOs upbringing.  Is anyone else considering moving closer to home to allow extended family to be more present in LOs life?

Re: Anyone considering moving once LO arrives?

  • We will be moving closer to family when LO is about 6 months old, and DS is 2.5.  It kind of just worked out that way -- I am getting my MBA in a region that we never intended to stay.  My mom wanted me to go to school close to my family because we already had DS, but I thought moving to a school with a strong community would take care of that.  It does to a point (we have so many free babysitting offers), but nothing can substitute for family.  I don't feel like I could ask anyone at school to take DS overnight or for the weekend (not that I couldn't trust them, I just wouldn't want to ask that of someone).  We are really looking forward to be able to drop the kids off at grandma's anytime we want to!  Plus, I grew up practically next door to all of my cousins, and I want my kids to have that too!

  • We will be moving, probably around the time the LO is six months, but because we are a military family. We are hoping to be stationed somewhere closer to family, but we would most likely still be three to four hours away, which is better, but still not a lot of help on a constant basis.

  • We are actually hoping to move a little farther away from our family when LO is about 6 months. We currently live within 20 minutes of both our parents and most of our siblings. In the last few months living this close has taken a toll on our marriage and we have decided it is best for everyone if we move. Not super far, within about 4 hrs, just enough that no one can should show up uninvited and we can easily come home for a weekend.

  • We were about 30 min from family and friends when we had LO and ended up moving across the bridge from seattle to bellevue to be closer to family.  Being near family with LO's is a must for us (not to mention cheaper than a babysitter) but ds LOVES to stop by grammie and grandad's house for an hour or so during the day or I can drop him off and run to the grocery really quick.  I can't imagine not being close to family and having that support.  Don't get me wrong I know people do it all the time but if you could be close it sure is an added bonus.  (that is of course you have great relationships with family!  We unfortunately are also close to the IL's and try to avoid them at all costs)

  • I'm actually not moving because of LO. I was originally going to transfer to another university to finish my degree there, but when I found out I was pregnant I decided to stay 1-2 semesters longer to be in a bigger city (with better drs) than the college town I was planning on moving to. After seeing everyone's excitement about the baby, and weighing the difference of graduating here versus graduating there, I decided to stay that way SO and LO grandparents can see him/her more than just every other weekend.

  • We are currently planning on moving back to the same town as both of our parents when I am about 32 weeks. But now DH is considering reenlisting. So now we may be moving a little further away than that, but still within driving distance (as long as he gets stationed where we're hoping). But yes, as soon as we found out I was pg we stopped considering all other places to move and both agreed to go much closer to home so we have family support and our LO has our families involved as much as possible.

  • We are moving at the end of may to be closer to family.  We are actually buying my parent's house so Baby will be raised in the same house I grew up in!  I would like for Baby to be able to see family more and my dad's health is declining so I want to be closer so I can help with things there, too.  I am very close to both my parents and my in-laws so I am looking forward to moving and would move earlier if I could!

  • we're most likely moving about 6 months after the baby is born. my husband is a ph student, so we're in NY temporarily. Once he's finished & job searching starts, we're off to wherever he lands a job.

  • DH is taking test all over the place right now and the 2 major places we are looking at is Austin Texas and Cleveland ohio. I would be happy with either and excited to get out of my small town.
