North Dakota Babies

I bought cloth today :)

Now what????  lol

I was in walmart and decided to pick up a pack of prefolds and a 4 pack of pins. I couldn't find any covers/rubber pants so I still need those.  I'm thinking I might like to try the snappies too.  Any ideas on where to buy this stuff?  I don't know of any stores in my area that might have it.  I guess online will be the way to go with this.

What about washing and detergents?  Do I need to prep the diapers for the first use in any way?  What detergent do you use?  I know you gals have mentioned something about if they are EBF and she isn't, so do I do something differently?  Where do you get your detergent?

Thanks!  I'm just going to give this a go.  Even if I only use them some of the time, I'll be happy.

ETA: Sorry, one more question.   Inserts would work with these, right?

    greenmountaindiapers.com or jilliamsdrawers.com

I don't know of any stores in my area that might have it.  I guess online will be the way to go with this.

What about washing and detergents?  I use Tide free and clear.  There are recs at green mountain diapers also.

Do I need to prep the diapers for the first use in any way?  I had to wash my prefolds 3 times before use for max absorbancy.

What detergent do you use?  I know you gals have mentioned something about if they are EBF and she isn't, so do I do something differently?   Now that she is eating solids at night, I hold the diaper in the toilet and flush.  That usually gets off any chunky poop.

Where do you get you detergent?

I buy the detergent from target.  I also use a Sunbright Oxygen Laundry booster thing for stains.  I have also laid them in the sun to sun out the stains.

Thanks!  I'm just going to give this a go.  Even if I only use them some of the time, I'll be happy.

  • How much does she weigh? I have some toddler size prefolds and I think a size large cover or two that I got used. I could send them to you if you want to try them. I know Cristina uses the Gerber prefolds, but I have heard they are not very absorbant. I know you don't want to invest a lot when you are just trying it out, but if they leak you are not going to be happy with it either. I would recommend trying the diaper trial from jillians drawers. You get to try a lot of the most popular kinds of diapers and if you don't like any of them you can send it all back and you are only out $10. Or you can keep what you like and you still get your money back for the rest. Otherwise, I have heard good things about green mountain diapers and cotton babies for prefolds. Thirsties is a good brand for covers. Some other good shops are abbys lane (always free shipping) and pinstripes and polka dots.

As for laundry, I use charlies soap, I get it from amazon. This is a good resource for choosing detergents: https://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoicesataglancepspd.htm Your detergent should not have any fragrance, fabric softener, enzymes, or optical brighteners. Free and clear detergents are generally not recommended.

We have not started solids yet, but I am thinking about getting flushable liners. You can also get a diaper sprayer that attaches to your toilet. Good luck!

  • She weighed about 22 lbs. at her one year appointment 2 months ago.  I don't think she's gained much since then - maybe around 23-24 pounds now.

Gerber is what I bought.  We'll see about the absorbency. I considered doing the trial at jillian's drawers, but decided to just try this out first.  And I was just looking at the thirsties. Wink But even with thirsties, there's at least 3 choices.

I'd love to try the ones you have.  I'll send you $$ to cover shipping and your costs.

  • I've heard a lot of negative things about the Gerber prefolds, too.  If you decide you want to CD, look into green mountain diaper prefolds.  They're about $2 each but they're worth it!

Thirsties covers are awesome.  I've used the sized covers and the duo wraps and love both.

  • Just a warning- you may not like the Gerber diapers.  From what I hear, they are horrible.  Let me know if you'd like to try some good-quality pre-folds.  I can send some out to you in September after I retrieve my cloth from my condo.  My friend just gave me a TON of diapers including over a dozen prefolds so I don't think I'll be needing all that I have.  I can also send you a snappis if you'd like.  Let me know!  :)

Here's the most local-to-you store I could find that carries cloth:

    Atlanta, GA 30324

Yeah, you have to prep the diapers to make them absorbent.  Otherwise they pee will just roll off of it.  :)  I know Rockin' Green is a really popular cloth diaper detergent though I love Clean B detergents.  But you have to buy those online.  Rockin' Green you can probably find in a store near you.

And yes, you can toss in some inserts!

  • I agree on getting the green mountain prefolds. I use gerber prefolds as burp cloths and they have nowhere near the absorbency of the G M prefolds. We use thirsties covers and I will definitely be selling the small size (7-18lbs) before your baby comes, if you're interested.

  • Wait, are these for Caroline? From what I understand, it's hard to get the absorbency you need for a 1 year old with prefolds. They pee right through them. I'd definitely try the jilliansdrawers.com trial to see what kind of diaper works for her.

Yes, right now they're for Caroline. The plan is to start CDing her now and then I'll start sooner with the next baby. What about the inserts that add extra absorbency?  That's what a lot of the websites are suggesting if you need extra, especially at night.

BRU will have the rubber pants and snappies you can get right on their website (just google snappies).

    What about washing and detergents?

I got a chrome pail from Target that had a little pedal for your foot and a black bucket inside it (I think it was $35)  You'll need to fill that 1/2 with water (keep in bathroom) and throw in a scoop of baby oxyclean or a swig of white vinegar.  Soak the diapers in there till you're ready to wash.  WHen you wash, if your washer has a rinse setting, use that with cold first to get the rest of the pee out.  If not, I do it by hand in my laundry room's slop sink.  Then wash on the hottest setting with the least amount of detergent possible to avoid build up and add a scoop of oxy or a swig of vinegar.

Do I need to prep the diapers for the first use in any way?

I washed them three times I think.  The gdiaper inserts I bought, I washed 6 times before I used (as recommended on the package).

    What detergent do you use?

I use whatever free and clear is on sale.

I know you gals have mentioned something about if they are EBF and she isn't, so do I do something differently?

I think the poop might just stain a bit more if she's not EBF.  No biggie.

Where do you get your detergent?

Target, supermarket, BRU - depends on what's on sale or who I've got a coupon for... yea, I'll spend money on bags, but not on detergent ;)

Inserts would work with these, right?

Yes, just layer it in the prefold.

I'm sorry, nothing I typed will bold!!!!

  • ETA: The gerber prefolds work fine for us!!!  Especially when layered with the gdiaper cloth insert!
