North Dakota Babies

suddenly angry baby (long)

so nia changed her temperment a couple days ago and i think it might be related to increased gas or her umbilical cord falling off. my SIL came over to visit monday and while here changed nia's diaper and snagged the cord on her gown in the process. i didn't witness this but i wasn't too happy about it because it must have meant she just pulled the gown down instead of lifting it over the cord which is what i usually do. i try not to micromanage but i'm going to have to go back to that when having visitors. anyway, not all of it came off and there's a dark scab left that's been bleeding occasionally onto her clothing. i wiped it with alcohol.

since that happened nia has been screaming her little head off and flailing her arms a lot. she squirms quite a bit too. i try to leave her in just a diaper for the most part to keep it from being agitated and will put a cloth diaper in between us when i feed her skin to skin.

she's very fussy too all of a sudden while feeding but i've been burping her and she has very strong burps. she's also has more spit since this happened. maybe it's just gas coinciding with the cord falling off and it's unrelated.

she was up today from about 9a.m.-4:30p.m. eating from boob to boob with crying in between (my boobs can't regenerate milk that fast and they're sore from not having a break!), but she's finally sleeping now. she had a hard burp before she went down and i noticed the flailing arms have stopped (she hates to be swaddled, but wakes herself up by failing her arms).

did this happen to anyone else? TIA!

  • Does she arch her back?  When G is gassy he arches his back and kicks his legs straight out.  That's how I can tell that it's gas and not something else.  But I don't know if all babies do that or just him.

Sorry she's not feeling well.  Hopefully she'll feel better when she wakes up!

  • That sounds rough :( I remember days like that. No real advice except that you might want to keep trying with the swaddle. Q fights it when we are actually swaddling her but it helps her to calm herself once she's all Wrapped up. Nia doesn't have a way to calm herself so you may have to intervene. Good luck mama!

  • Is she actually hungry when she is constantly at the breast or just comfort sucking? Alexa did a lot of that at that age. Also they usually have a growth spurt at 2 weeks maybe that is causing the extra fussiness?

  • Sorry you've had a rough couple of days. I don't think there are nerve endings around the umbilical cord, but maybe it wouldn't hurt to put a call into the pedi to be sure that it couldn't be causing her any discomfort. Reese has been getting fussy during feedings as well, & I will stop & burp her each time it happens. I almost always get a big burp out of her, so I assume its from gas. Sounds similar to what Nia is doing. I'm not doubting you when you say that Nia hates being swaddled, because she definitely might. But, we thought the same thing about Reese & we were wrong. She would cry when she was swaddled, so after a couple of days, we gave up. After a couple of weeks of refusing to sleep in her bassinet, we decided to try again. We swaddled her, & then I held her, & talked to her to soothe her for a minute or two while she cried, & then she zonked out. We did this for a few nights, & each time she slept soundly after that. Now we have her swaddled for every nap & bedtime, & she sleeps much better. She does the flailing arms & startles herself just like Nia if she isn't. She no longer cries when we initially swaddle her, & now it's just the opposite--it can calm her when she's crying. Like I said, maybe Nia does hate it. I just thought that I would share because trying it again has made a huge difference for us. I hope she gets back to feeling like herself again soon!
  • I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this! I can definitely relate as C has always been quite the fussy baby. I don't know what might be causing nia discomfort, but just know that you are not alone and all babies go through fussy times, whether its in their early weeks or months down the road. Just remember to keep calm because they can sense your stress and it gets them more fussy. I hope she is back to her happy self soon!
  • thank you everyone for the advice! i'll keep trying the swaddling. she loves when my husband wears her in the moby. she goes from screaming to limp in it. i may start doing this too. i do think it's gas from what everyone said. i think she's using my boobs as a pacifier (we tried the soothie too and she doesn't like it so may get another). for now i'm enjoying the fact that she's sleeping!
  • I'm sorry, I've been going through this too.  I've noticed that when I eat certain things it gets worse (chocolate is terrible!).  She also uses my boobs as a paci and I can't get her to take a real one, and we've tried 4 different kinds!  I don't really have any advice (in fact I'm going to try swaddling again) but I just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone!

  • Are you sure it is not a growth spurt? I swear Gianna hated me her 2nd week of life lol!! She was miserable to be around.....
  • Hi Quiana!!  I'm sorry you're having a rough time!  I definitely can sympathize - Mari screamed ALL.DAY.LONG. in the beginning.

It sounds to me like Nia is both gassy and growing.  I don't recommend even giving her a paci just yet because she might be boosting up your production by nursing all day and preparing for a growth spurt (I'm pretty sure there's one at 10 days and another at 3 weeks, so she might be a little late to the 10 day one).

Also, definitely definitely definitely swaddle her.  Get your hands on "Happiest Baby on the Block" and use the 5 Ss.

    Hang in there girl!!!
