Hi there! Yes, they are cute, aren't they? Both boys. Four months old.
No, we haven't started solids yet. No, we don't plan to for another couple of months, unless they indicate that they want to. No, we don't think they'll be malnourished.
Yes, I know you did things differently in your day. Yes, I know your kids turned out fine. Mine are fine too, so STFU, m'kay?
Kthxbai.

Amen! Haha!
Now, go print that, make it into a sign and stick it at the front of your stroller, pronto!
Yup, a lot of them used to start rice cereal as early as 2 months (although I think 3 was more common?). Some of them still think that it's necessary for nutrition and that the baby won't thrive on breastmilk/formula. *sigh*
I could have written this too... only to my FIL!! It's funny. Yes they did things different then but the kids still survived. I think that was the hardest thing for me to get across to him, they do things different now because they found a BETTER way to do them! Something that's better for the CHILD!! I pretty much do things my way, DH makes fun of me for it. Our pedi tried to talk me into supplementing AND into feeding her solids at 4 months... no way was I doing either... to each their own!
Oh and your kids look totally healthy! Which is funny because Bella is still thin no matter how much she eats. The other day FIL was in shock that she ate yogurt, a banana and a 1/2 piece of whole grain toast for breakfast in addition to some milk. Yes, shocker, she's thin but we're not starving her despite what he thinks! It's annoying!
Or even 1 month, my mom told me. And they started us on real milk at 6 months. She thinks it's a conspiracy for formula companies to make more money.
hahaha, my grandparents were TOTALLY like that. Hello, look at him - he is thriving. No food needed.
My SIL said something to this effect when she was visiting - she started at 6 weeks and possibly earlier. AND that she got the recommendation from her ped (no reflux issues).
Her 2 y/o daughter has the worst asthma and skin issues and I asked if her doctor has ever mentioned anything about an allergy (MILK/DAIRY!!!) and she said she would ask - she told me the doc said there is no link. Not sure if I totally believe her because maybe she didn't really ask her doctor - but eek. I also know that that same ped over prescribes antibiotics - she doesn't even make SIL come in for a script - she brags that she can just call in and get one and that her daughter was pretty much on abx all winter. SOOOO, all that said, I do think it's possible her doctor gave her that advice.
yea, I don't know about your SIL's ped!! I mean if you can't get decent treatment from the ped, you can't be surprised the older generation is sticking to their old beliefs!
hah - I feel like I'm always talking about bad dr/ped - but the GOOD stories don't really necessitate a story. So, I feel like I should say I know gobs of people with GREAT doctors and peds
That advice was probably from someone in the older generation though!
As a side note - we started rice cereal eary b/c of his reflux, and it did NOTHING to help him STTN!
Funny our pedi told us to give Bella rice cereal no later than 4 months if we wanted her STTN... but like I said before, I do what I want and don't always follow the recommendations of our pedi
It helps that I'm a peds nurse so I do have some knowledge to back it up...
However feeding Bella solids, started her sleeping WORSE! I mean WAY worse! She had major tummy and constipation issues, I'm talking no poop for 5 days and the pedi said to wait 10 days and bring her in... clearly the lady has never been constipated! We gave her a glycerin suppository on day 5 and once she pooped she was a whole new kid.
I'm not sure if it is. I actually heard from several YOUNG (very early 20s, even a late-teens) mothers say the same thing. They also claim that if you thicken their formula by adding less water, it will get them to STTN. Umm, maybe so, but can we say helloooooo dehydration? There's a reason there's a certain water:formula ratio you need to use!
Anyway, I think this advice is something that perhaps used to be done back in the day, and now in my area at least, the youngest childbearing generation is adopting it again if they're not educated as to why it's a bad idea.
(These moms are mostly from lower socio-economic backgrounds and these are often oops pregnancies, so I think it's simply that they've heard this stuff from someone, probably an older someone, and now it's becoming accepted advice among their peer group because they're simply not educated otherwise.)
