High-Risk Pregnancy

Not HR but TTC #2 S/O Pre-e from a few posts below...

I had pre-e with my 1st. My BP started to rise around 35 weeks and a few days. Then at 36 weeks 3 days I was admitted to L&D to be induced. Since one of the posters said the earlier it comes the more likely it is to return...since it developed so late in my pregnancy is there a decent chance when I get pregnant with baby #2 that I could avoid it all together?

 Thanks for your help!

  • That's what "they" say, but there's no real telling with pre-e.  I had PIH around 30 weeks with DD, so fairly early, but never had bad labs or protein to get the pre-e diagnosis until 39 weeks!  So I was really full term when I was induced.  But this time around, I started showing bp issues again at 33 weeks, and I'm waiting to see if I escape pre-e this time... so it's really hard to say.

They always told me it was a 20% chance of it coming back.  But you'll hear lots of different quotes on risk.  It's a gamble!  But I would think that since you had it on the later side of pregnancy, that's at least a good sign that it wouldn't be super early this time either.

  • I don't think there is any way to know for sure.  It's like the 12 week test where your odds come back 1 in ___.  Someone is always that 1.   The odds may be in your favor that you won't get it (assuming those numbers are true) but some women get it earlier.  I was one of those women.  I got it at 35 weeks last time and had my son at 36 weeks.  This time the protein started at 28 weeks and full blown pre-e at 33 weeks.  I was put in the hospital at that point until I had my daughter at 36 1/2 weeks.
3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.

  • DS was born close to 36 weeks and wasn't detected before I was rushed to hospital with pre e symptoms. With this last pregnancy I developed pre e at 24 weeks and just delivered yesterday at 34w 3d so in my case it came on earlier and severe a lot quicker then first one
