Pedi said no nuts/shellfish until 2

I apologize if this gets asked a lot, but I scrolled back a bunch of pages and didn't see any similar posts about this.

At our 1 year checkup the pedi said no nuts/tree nuts or shellfish until age 2. I don't know why I didn't think to ask her about the newer studies linking late exposure to actually increasing the chance of allergies. There was just so much going on I completely blanked.

What did your pedi say about introducing these foods? What is your opinion on waiting until 2? Do you feel it will increase my DS' likelihood of becoming allergic?

TIA for any replies.

Re: Pedi said no nuts/shellfish until 2

  • I don't recall what our pedi said, but I know the chart they had out at the pedi's office says to wait until 2.  We gave DD peanut butter shortly after her first birthday and have had no issues - aside from the fact that she wants to eat it all.the.time.  She's had shellfish without incident as well.

  • My pedi said the latest research shows there really is no need to hold off on foods after one, he just advised us to make sure and wait in between those types of foods to check for a reaction.  As for whether that will increase allergies, I am not sure.
  • My pedi never gives advice on food. We started pb before a year and DS loves lobster. IDK when we started but it was under 18 mos. We have no allergies in the family either.

  • Our pedi's suggestion is anything goes after 1 unless LO has shown signs of allergies previously, or there are any allergies in the family. Neither DH nor I have any allergies, so it's a free for all for us. DD had both shortly after her 1st bday.

  • My pedi never gave food advice except for okaying the start of solids at 6 mos. and the start of milk at 12 mos. I have given DD food containing nuts and lots of seafood since she was around 8 months or so. Our families have no history of food allergies so I wasn't too concerned.

  • Our Ped let us give DS peanut butter in her office at the 1yr visit.  Other than milk and honey and things he could choke on, she didn't really give us any restrictions.  At the 1 yr visit she forbade us from giving him any more jar food... she really wanted to force us to give him real food.

  • Our pedi said no nuts until 3. They used to say 2 but now it's 3. We are waiting and are listening to the Pedi on this. I dont want to take any chances.

  • Like pps have said our pedi never really told us much about food, except for milk. we have given DD peanut butter, shrimp, crawfish and crabs she has had no reaction to any of it, but we dont have any allergies in our family either.
  • All our pedi said relating to foods at his 1 year visit was this...

"He can eat anything you would eat from now on".  That to me means he can have anything and everything.  I gave DS a small bite of shrimp last night and he just chewed it up and spit it out.  I think as long as you give small tastes at first to see if there's a reaction it would be ok.

  • An excerpt from our 9 month check-up:

Me: We're pretty liberal about letting him try foods and so far we have seen no signs of allergies.

Doc: Oh, well then I wouldn't worry too much.

Me: Yeah, his favorite food is clam chowder.

Doc: (choking back shock) Wow, you weren't kidding. (Pause) And he's had it more than once?

Me: About 5 times so far, the first time about a month ago. (We eat a lot of leftovers.)

Doc: Well, in that case I'd say you're pretty much ok. You can even introduce PB a little early if you want, and that should help his caloric intake.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • The pedi I was originally taking my kids to okayed PB, nuts and shellfish at 1. Well not shellfish for my kids because I am allergic, but shellfish for most kids. We moved across town and have a new pediatrician now and she says no PB/nuts until 3. We had already introduced them at 1 so we kept giving them. I love our new pediatrician, but this is one area I don't follow her advice.

  • My pedi said after DS turned 1 anything was fair game. We're holding off on peanuts due to some food allergies in my family but DS has had other nuts and shellfish w/o any problems.
  • Pedis have a range of responses when it comes to introducing foods and allergies.  I think you just have to decide for yourself.  Since we have no history of food allergies, we've given DD almost everything.  We have yet to do PB, but we'll do it soon.  She's been eating soy butter so I just figured I'd wait until that jar is gone before getting into PB.  We haven't done nuts, but only because of the choking hazard issue.

  • Our doctor didn't even mention shellfish. She said no nuts/honey until 12 months. We don't eat shellfish so that's a moot point for us anyway, but DS has had peanut butter and he did fine.
