Lies, Lies, There All Lies!

Hi guys!  I am expecting my first child Friday.. and everyone (in-laws, friends, random people on the street..) tells me how close I am and all these little remedies to help get ready for labor.... they do NOT WORK ladies!  Of course I haven't started some of the riskier ones I found on the internet such as stimulating nipples, drinking castor oil (which I probably won't try PERIOD) and those things that doctors recommend for after your due date has passed.  But the midwife I see every once in a while told me last week have lots of sex= did that!  Some website told me to do squats every morning= do that and walk 1/2 mile + I have been walking from building to building at the university I attend this week.  I also swim once a week and I have even started roller blading with my SS.  SO gives me massages, and we have even started nonevasive accupressure, where SO applies pressure to certain points on your body.. yeah none of that stuff helped any, the doctor told me today that I would most likely need to be induced, and since I hadn't effaced any and I have been dilated 1 cm for 2 weeks now, he won't induce me until the evening of Sunday, September 5, 2010. BUMMER!  Yeah so now I am convinced that it is up to God and your baby whether delivery will be early, on time or late.  So stay healthy ladies and get ready for the long haul.  Which of course isn't a bad thing in comparison to premature labor.. oh and I am sure someone will feel the need to notify me that I am on the wrong board posting this.. thanks for reading and I apologize beforehand!

  • I won't say that you are on the wrong board, but I will say you are completely mental to be roller blading at 9 mos pregnant!

And you are not even at your due date yet...chill.

  • So you won't do the nipple stimulation but you will rollerblade?

Look, not to get too much TMIey, but it's not just the semen from the sex that starts you off, but the big happy O.  Do what you have to, to get that face.

  • The doctor says rollerblading has less imapct on my joints than walking.. and not to stimulate nipples until after my due date.  I'm aware my due date isn't here sweetie, I just didn't like hearing that I wouldn't be induced until the 5th of September!  We previously set an appointment for me to be induces on the 31st of August, and when he looked at my cervix today he came to the conclusion I wouldn't be ready by then.  =[

  • Why is rollerbladding okay, but nipple stimulation is not? To me, that would mean twist your nipples and OMG labor. And since your due date is Friday, I would be touching boobies like I was at free night at the boobie bar. Not until Friday of course.
  • Huh?

Maybe TMI but if I'm having sex you can be sure there's some nipple touching in there.

  • This thread has me doing this Indifferent and this Confused.

Your doctor is an idiot.  I was told no rollerblading as soon as I got pregnant because of the risk of falling and the potential for impact to rupture the placenta...

...and it's THEY'RE all lies, not there.  Their, They're and There are NOT interchangeable.

  • Ditto pp...has the baby dropped at all?  I was 1cm dilated for a couple of weeks and ended up being induced two weeks before my due date because of medical reasons but we found out when I was 9cm the reason the baby had never dropped was because she was face up instead of face down and couldn't get past my pubic bone.  I ended up with an emergency c-section as a result - but not because of the induction just her position

Um... Duh. If it's not time for that baby to come out, it''s not going to. Just like if it is time, you can't push it back in there. Gert ready for it because you are no longer the maker of your schedule for a very very long time.

  • Wow, so much wrong here.

    1. It's THEY'RE. As in like: They are all lies. There can be used in a sentence like this: The dog lies over there.

    2. I could understand such a vent if you were 40w+ but you're not even at your EDD yet! Your baby will get here when he/she's ready, preferably anytime beteween 37-42 weeks.

    3. I have a high respect for midwives, DD was delivered by one and I saw her my entire pregnancy. If I could see her for my regular well-woman stuff I would but I can't b/c of my insurance. HOWEVER any medical professional that recommends rollerblading over walking deserves a big side-eye in my opinion. I wouldn't rollerblade un-pregnant because I'm a bit clumsy. I sure as HELL wouldn't pregnant, even if I had all the grace of Martha Graham.

    4. Castor Oil will give you nothing but the runs.

    5. LOL @Paris and her boob bar.

Oh wow sorry to read that, the idea of stitches in any form frightens me.  I am praying I don't have to get a c-section or have a torn perineum (as "idiot" doc also does not perform episiotimes ((hope I spelled that right!)) )  I still have 2 days left so hope is still alive, but no she hasn't dropped at all.  Doctor's exact words "this baby just wants to stay up there.." =[  I haven't gotten another ultrasound since week 35, and she was "in position" so I hope that's not a reason for her not dropping.

LOL wow sorry I used the wrong THERE THEIR THEY'RE, amazing how many people it offended.  And as off balance as we preggies are, walking we could fall and rupture something, I am not speed racing, just keeping up with a 3yo on a 1/4 mile jogging path.  I think I'll just listen to my OBGYN but thanks for all your "concern" doctor bumpies Wink

It didn't offend anyone. It's just annoying that an adult, who is getting ready to give birth does not know the proper way to use there, their, and they're. It's pretty basic English 101.

  • I'm a nurse preparing to start my Masters. Your Doc is nutty as a fruitcake if he suggests roller blading as an appropriate form of exercise for someone as far along as yourself. Maybe early on but definitely not now.

I'm not sure what your getting at as far as episiotomies. No they aren't necessary as much as they're performed and you do heal better along a tear but there are plenty of situations in which they justified. Any "idiot" Doc would let you know that as well.

  • FWIW - You've got it pretty easy right now. You've been 1cm dilated for a couple weeks with no effacement? That's pretty normal, actually.

You want to talk to someone who had a rough pregnancy, talk to Shorty. She was in "labor" for a month, technically speaking, right?  If I'm wrong, I'm thinking of someone else. Either way, if you're still balanced enough to stay upright on roller blades, I'd say you're doing better than most, even if you are taking serious risks.

Oh, and as far as stitches go, even if you don't have an episiotomy (sp?), many women still have to have stitches. I only needed one stitch, luckily, and it's actually quite rare to need so few. But I doubt at that point you'll care about stitches.

    Thank you, McNursey.

OP, you do realize that whether you have a C-section or a vaginal delivery, episotomy or tear naturally, you will most likely end up with stitches.

Post-partum, the stitches will be the least of your concerns....

  • I'm only going to say this as someone whose baby did not move down until I was induced and dilated to a 10 for 4 hours before DS was even born. There is usually a reason the baby doesn't move down or doesn't come early or on time. My DS was 4 days late and I was induced.  He never moved down until I was finally allowed to push 4 hours after I was fully dilated and it was apparent he wasn't moving down on his own and it was a last ditch effort before I had a csection. It was because his cord was wrapped around his neck twice. No one knew this until he was born. He was born blue and not breathing and had to have a NICU team come in and get him breathing. Luckily, he is fine. So if I were you I would chill out and not try to force something.

Oh my I'm so sorry to hear that, that's the most frightening thing!  A friend of mine had a c-section earlier this month and her baby's cord was wrapped around his neck and in a knot!  I pray nothing like that is going on, but I think you guys are getting the wrong impression from my post.  I don't recall venting because I am in a rush, and when I read the post again it said exactly what I meant:

THE OLD WIVES' TALES AND HOME REMEDIES PEOPLE TELL PREGNANT WOMEN TO PERFORM TO DILATE AND PREPARE THEIR CERVIX AND BABY FOR BIRTH HAVE NOT WORKED
FOR ME, ALLOW ME TO EXPLAIN MYSELF:  I AM NOT TURNED ON BY THE TOUCH OF MY OWN HAND, AND A WEBSITE I VISITED SAID NIPPLE STIMULATION IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE RELEASE OF OXYTOCIN AND SHOULDN'T BE PERFORMED UNTIL AFTER DUE DATE, IT IS NOT AFTER MY DUE DATE SO I DON'T RUB MY NIPPLES... IT IS GREAT THAT YOU GUYS ENJOY RUBBING YOUR NIPPLES...? I DO NOT.  I NEVER SAID MY DOCTOR RECOMMENDED ROLLERBLADING, THE ONLY REASON I MENTIONED THE FACT THAT I ROLLERBLADE WAS TO GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF HOW I HAVE REMAINED ACTIVE.  I ASKED MY DOCTOR IF IT WAS OK TO ROLLERBLADE AND HE SAID I DON'T SEE A PROBLEM WITH IT JUST HAVE SOMEONE WITH YOU TO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T INJURE YOURSELF, HE ONLY ADDED THE FACT THAT IT IS EASIER ON THE JOINTS TO ROLLERBLADE AFTER WE TALKED ABOUT IT AWHILE.   I FOLLOWED THE RULES AND DID WHAT MY DOCTOR SAID WAS FINE, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WHAT I FELT COMFORTABLE DOING, I CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW OR WHY THAT BOTHERS ANYONE?  WHEN I WENT TO THE DOCTOR TUESDAY HE INFORMED ME THAT BABY HASN'T MOVED DOWN AND CERVIX HAS NOT PREPARED FOR LABOR, AND HE GAVE ME A ESTIMATED DATE OF SEPT. 5 FOR MY CERVIX TO BE READY TO INDUCE LABOR. IF THIS IS BECAUSE, GOD FORBID, BABY'S CORD IS AROUND HER NECK OR SOME OTHER UNFORSEEN REASON I WILL TAKE BACK MY OPINION THAT THE OLD WIVE'S TALES DON'T WORK, BUT IN MY EXPERIENCE, IT IS UP TO GOD AND BABY AND NOT BRISK WALKS, HOT SEX, OR EVEN THE OPINION OF A DOCTOR, WE ALL KNOW SOMETIMES THEIR EDDS ARE INCORRECT.
