Re: for those of you taking unisom

  • I take nightly Benadryl which is roughly the same active ingredient. I have awful allergies and insomnia so it seems to do the trick!:)

  • Benadryl and unisom have different active ingredients. Benadryl is diphenhydramine and unisome is doxylamine. I wasn't prescribed unisom but it is listed on my OB's website as morning sickness help. I take 1/2 unisom morning and night, along with vitamin b6 morning and night. Their website said 25 and 25 of the b6, but I couldnt find it so I do 50 and 50. Instead of unisom, I took the generic version which is doxylamine and its alot cheaper. I believe you also do not want the unisom gel tabs.

I'm taking unisom OTC.  Like pp said, you want the regular version, not the gel tabs.  I take one before bed and one in the morning.  Could take a 3rd, but am opting not too because of the sleepiness (which is starting to wear off now that I've been on it a few weeks)... I also do 50 mg of B6 3x/day in a P5P/sublingual form because it's supposedly more effective.  Good luck!

  • I'm going back to see my DR today, and I'm going to ask the same thing, but from what I was told by two friends who just had babies, it'd be safe to take half a unisom every morning. I really, really, REALLY hope this helps because I cannot spend anymore time at work with my head in a trashcan.

  • I am iffy about taking up to 3 Unisom per day. I too have terrible insomnia and morning sickness. Started with 1 Unisom at night then 1/2 tablet during day time to help ease morning sickness. Now I find myslef on 1 1/2 tablets at night because taking just 1 was wearing off too quickly. I was prescribed Ambien but I hallucinated which I didn't like. Should I give Ambien another chance because Unisom just doesnt do it anymore. Plus I wake up around 2 am on Unisom and can not go back to bed til 6 or 7 am.
