Glucose drink-on ice or not?

What's your opinion?  I've heard drinking it over ice is better.  Have to take the nastiness this week.

Re: Glucose drink-on ice or not?

  • They normally keep it in the fridge so it's nice and cool.  Either way it sucks.  But drinking it cold "helps".

  • No because it will the dilute the solution! Just put it in the fridge so it will be cold.
  • The colder the better in my opinion.  I keep it in the fridge, put it in the freezer for about 15 min or so before drinking, pour over ice and drink with a straw (doesnt coat your tongue and you can get it down fast).  It really wasnt bad for me but I know its awful for some people.

  • It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be- I didn't bring it home before hand, just showed up at the lab, drank it in a couple gulps, and that was it.  Drew my blood an hour later, and I was good to go.

  • IMO the colder it is when you drink it the easier it goes down! I kept mine in the fridge and about an hour before I needed to drink it I put in it in the freezer for when I drank it.

  • Definitely cold. My office keeps them in the fridge.

I was told I could drink water between the time I finished the drink and had the test, so I dont know that this really matters.

  • I did not have mine on ice, but I wasn't given the option or I probably would have done that!

BUT - they tell you to drink it in 5 minutes, so if it is too cold that might be hard to do.

  • I was told to get it as cold as possible to help it go down by my doctor's office.....

    Same for me!

  • Oh I forgot about the straw trick....good point!

  • I wasn't allowed to take it home with me or leave once I drank it!  I was going to drink it and go home because the lab is literally across the street from my house and I had to sit in the waiting room for an hour and it was warm!  They didn't give me any options, but it wasn't that bad I literally chugged it as fast as I could even the nurse was like wow!  But it was the only way it was going down.  They let me take a couple sips of water to get the nasty taste out of my mouth but I couldn't just drink freely as they said it would dilute the solution.

  • It's really not that bad IMO. But I don't think you should put it over ice, just keep it in the fridge, and drink it cold. I think the ice would dilute it, and I don't think thats OK. My dr's office told me nothing to eat or drink after drinking the stuff.
  • DEFINITELY put it in the fridge, drink it through a straw (not sure why but it seemed to help me) and go with the orange flavor, it was the least disgusting one (tasted like a flat old Fanta soda) cheer up! it won't be too bad :) GL!
  • Have you ever just pounded a beer?  If you do that with the glucose drink, you don't even taste it.  Smile

  • I didn't mind the taste at all.  They had it cold for me and it tasted exactly like orange Fanta, which I used to love as a kid but I haven't had in years. I didn't like the 100ml of glucose for the 3-hour test as much, it was just too sweet but I can't complain.

After having to drink things down for other medical tests in the past (not pregnancy related), this was quite good.

  • My office didn't give me a choice.  It was kept cold, but I had to drink it in the office and was not allowed to leave.  I really didn't think it was as bad as everyone said it would be.  I just chugged it as fast as I could and like others have said, it tasted like flat orange Fanta.

This.  I don't understand why people freak out about it so much-maybe some of the drinks are worse than what I had.  I had the orange glucola and I kept it in the fridge and poured it over ice.  It was sweet, but not gross.

  • It was given to me in the dr's office straight from a cold fridge. I chugged it - was done in like 20 seconds and was fine. It was even orange flavored (which I have a long standing aversion to) and I was fine. NBD!
  • I had to drink it once I got to the lab and had to stay in their view. Cold is definately better. Although they allowed me one very, very tiny sip of water(cause it made me feel sick) that was it. No ice cause it dilutes it and no water or food! All in all it wasn't that bad, especially compared to the one I drank 11 years ago! I have noticed that each offices rules are different though. Good Luck!
  • It's really not that bad IMO.. I mean its not the best but suck it up and drink it.

  • As with anything, people react differently to everything. For me it tasted terrible then I spent the hour sitting in a hard chair trying not to throw it back up. Do not drink it warm! Cold is better for sure. I came back to the office two weeks later and the doctor tells me I have to do the one hour test again. Why? because someone didn?t run all the needed tests when they took my blood. Ugh! Word of advice, if you are like me and get nauseous, make sure you eat protein before you take it and after to flush out the sugars.

I was told the opposite. I couldn't drink anything (even water) after I have drank the solution. It makes sense though because it will dilute the solution. There is a reason why they have 50 g of glucose in there. The result of the blood test is dependent on assuming you have taken that much sugar. If you drank water, then it will not be accurate. I guess if it's just a couple of sips of water, it shouldn't matter much.

Its very obvious every Dr's office handles it differently.  I dont see why mine would tell me this if they had issues with it.

  • Go for the ice. I had the one hour test with and the three hour without - definitely went down easier with ice.
