DD is developing a flat spot on her head

Our pedi didnt seemed concerned at her 2 mos appt but from what I'm reading online it seems like a big deal.  We do tummy time and she is great with turning her head, however she has reflux and has to sleep in a bouncy seat.

Has anyone had any issues with this and do you know if it will just go away on its own?

Re: DD is developing a flat spot on her head

  • my pedi said the same thing yesterday.. her flat spot is on the right side. the dr. said to try and get her head to turn to the other side for a few weeks and it should even itself out. its just fluid build up but can eventually turn into something wors like a permanent flat spot.. he said to prop her head up so she cant turn it back the other way cause she might prefer the right??? i tryed this tactic and i was so nervous about it. i kept checking on her every so often and she eventually woke up and almost rolled on her stomach!! no more of that!!! it scared the hell out of me!! im just gonna try and get her to turn her head the other way when i put her down now it better work!

  • My DD had a flat spot on her right side because she likes to sleep with her head turned to the right.  My pedi said it's nothing to be too concerned about yet.  If it's still flat or worse by her 4 month check up they'll recommend PT.  But as far as I can tell... her head is less flat on the right because I have been holding her up right a lot during the day and making her turn her head the other direction for anything she wants to see.  She has pretty good neck control so I have her sit up while holding her head up a lot during the day.  It seemed to have helped.

Another thing you can do is while she's in the bouncy seat have her turn herhead to either side when awake so she is off the back of her head looking at you or a toy.

  • We had this issue with our DS, went to PT for it and were told to just lay him down to sleep with this head turned to his non favored side, and if he turned it to his favored side during the night, to turn it back again. Also to increase the amount of tummy time, carry him upright more during the day, and make sure swings, cribs etc were turned so that he would now face us/interesting things in the room using his non favored side. Once your LO can sit unassisted, their head shape will improve.

We did these things and saw an improvement within a few weeks. He's 3.5 months now (I know, I'm lurking!) and his head is evening itself out. Thank god, because for a while there his head looked odd and I was really worried. Even his eyes were starting to look wonky because his head was flat on one side causing the other side to look bulged.
