Talk to me about 4D u/s

I have an opportunity to get a free 4D gender u/s between 16-20 weeks.  Part of me would love to find out earlier than 20 weeks, part of me thinks anything before 18 is a load of poo. I have heard 4D are more accurate but still. I'm thinking 17 or 18 weeks. When, if at all, would you schedule it? Hmm, maybe I need a clicky poll. [Poll]

Re: Talk to me about 4D u/s

  • if its pictures your going for then all you need is the 3D. the 4D is the movement of the baby as well and unless you plan on buying a DVD then its not worth it. also last time I went I was told to go after 25wks because then they baby will have more meat on its body and will look better in the pictures.

So you wouldn't do it? They only do the free gender u/s between 16 and 20 weeks.

  • I am scheduling mine for 17 weeks b/c it's my mom's birthday and also my mother-in-law's birthday - so I am trying to do it as a "birthday present" for them. I don't think 17 weeks is too early, but I am a little weary of anything earlier than that.

  • SS here.  Opinions are like ass_holes, and I'm an ass_hole with an opinion.  I wouldn't go at all.  You'll already be getting an anatomy u/s at around that time, so why bother with the 3D/4D at all?  I dunno, I'm just wary of these, especially when done in a non-hospital setting.

  • Search on line and see what the pictures for each of those weeks look like.... Like a PP said the best photos come from 25 weeks.... I got a 3d at the high risk dr at 14 weeks.... and the babies looked really creepy and weird . I would have preferred not to see them. SO do a little research before you make your decision on what the photos will prob look like

Part of me feels this way and part of me is like a kid with sparkly new toy. I may not do it.

  • I agree with PP about checking out what your baby will look like at whichever week so you aren't surprised (in a bad way), but hell, I'd take a free 3D/4D u/s for an early gender scan!  Why not?  I may not go buy a truckload of pink in excitement right afterwards - just in case, but it'd be fun... and free!  (I voted 18w.)

You have an OB appointment, right?  Talk to your doctor about it.  I did the other day and it was really interesting to hear her take on them.

I admit, as resolute as I am in my opinion on these things, it would be hard to refuse if it was free.

Yes, tomorrow. That is a great idea. Yeah, free is really hard to say no to.

  • If its free why not do it...my doctors office always gives me 3D / 4D Ultrasounds while they do their routine ones since the have the technology right in the office...I will agree the baby does look a little freaky when they don't have much fat on them (see my siggy) but hey I would do it if its free. I also voted for 18 weeks :-)

  • The place I am going to on Sept 7th has a money back guarentee gender determination. They say as early as 14 weeks their tech's can tell and be about 90% accurate.

  • Here is my opinion... take it or leave it Wink

I went right over 16 weeks for the 3D/4D u/s basically for some cool photos & gender determination.  well.... I think the people told me the 3D/4D would be great before we got in there just to get me into that 1st appointment.  He was able to tell us it is a girl however.... not great pictures.  DH & I were pretty disappointed actually.  He said we can come back (so we are on 8/28) for a double check on the gender, at no additional cost.  However during the appointment we had he then decided to share with us that 3D/4D don't really work out until the baby is much further along - the quality of the photos & video is not good early on.  So with that said, i would not go for the 3D/4D until much later in your pregnancy.

  • She is asking based on the gender determination..... Not bc of how cute and accurate the babies face is going to be.  We all know the babies are "scary" looking this early bc they have such tiny amounts of fat on there bodies.

and its a FREE gender determination.

Thank you!!! Yes OP, I'd hop on this train to freeland as fast as possible. I voted 19 wks. I had my anatomy scan with my DS then, and it was awesome to see him. It wasn't a 3D, but I wish we'd had one because he was shy in the anatomy scan and we couldn't see his turtle!
