Baby Name book made me LOL

I borrowed Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana:  What to Name Your Baby Now  from the library to help with our girl name delimma.  It's interesting and has some far out names (Infinity?  Antiquity?  Kismet?) but it's entertaining and enlightening.

Under the place names category, alongside Dakota and Savannah, it listed Guernsey and Quintana Roo.  Guernsey - like the cow?  I understand it's a place in England, but it's also a breed of cow.  I think they should mention that.  And Quintana Roo?  Yes, I went there on my honeymoon, but if I got KU'ed while I was there, I think Maya, as in Riveria Maya, would have been a better location name choice than Quintana Roo.

No wonder some people name their children what they do...

  • Joan Didion named her daughter Quintana Roo.

After reading her book, The Year of Magical Thinking, I can't think of that name without getting very sad. But it's a wonderful book and Joan Didion is a wonderful writer.

  • Quintana Roo is the brand of wetsuit my DH bought for his triathlon.  Personally, I like Jennifer, and Jason.  Call me boring.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • I laugh at my baby name book  all the time. The author, Bruce Lansky, is a running joke in my house now because he clearly padded it with BS names to up the total count.

I mean, seriously Bruce...a 'names with punctuation' (as in, apostrophes)  list? Also there's an 'American ' list that involves completely made up names.  It's so stupid.

Last night I discovered "J." (with a period)  and "J" (without one)  were both listed as names. l mean, there's no excuse for that!

  • My sister-in-law gave me a bunch of baby books and I was flipping through the name one the other day. Pretty much just your standard 'most popular names' but there was a section on "Creating a Unique Name" and it actually suggested just adding syllables to already-thought out names. Like...adding -er to the end of things (Griffoner...Scotter...Kayer were actually some of the suggestions) or adding la- or sha- to the beginning. (LaKay...Shahannah...) it went on to suggest that no one would have these names so they would be unique...i almost cried i laughed so hard.
