Flu shot...

I know flu season is still 3 months away but how many of you have decided to get the vaccine or not get it? I dont think ill be getting it,(i didnt get it with 1st preg) but would like to her what you ladies think!

Re: Flu shot...

  • I'm getting it. I was asking our neighbor about the shot for DS, it will have the H1 vac included in it and she told me that I should get it as well.

  • I was under the assumption most doctors wanted you to get it for your health and the baby's health.
  • I will be getting it. I get one every year, even when I was pregnant with my son. My doctors thoughts were, " the risks of getting the shot are far less then the risks of getting the actual flu while pregnant".

DS will also be getting one, he actually had the flu last year before he was old enough to get the shot, it was a rough couple weeks. Now only if I could convince DH to get one also.

  • I am admantly against getting flu shots on a normal basis. I am a nurse and I have to sign papers that go in my file every year about how I suck for not getting a flu shot. This year, I will be getting one. Most people DO NOT die from the flu, but the highest death rate for people who get the flu are pregnant women. You can't treat it with the right drugs while you are pregnant, so I am going to suck it up and get a shot I don't agree with.

  • Like Kdodge... I've never gotten one and don't plan on starting now....

Lemon -- all that needs to happen is for your husband to get the flu, as happened to my husband last year. He was out of work for a week, all headachy and feverish and miserable on the couch. I took care of him the entire week and didn't get the flu (as I get the shot every year). He decided his previous intransigence was not the way to go in the future.

Collier -- the science behind the flu shot is solid, and the fact is that you -- and your baby -- are much safer with the flu shot than with the flu. For me, it's a complete no-brainer. I am tolerant about a lot of differences in opinion, but science is not one of them. So, I'm sorry if I sound harsh and judgmental, but it's just my way of highly encouraging you to consult with your doctor, and reputable online sources, and make the decision to protect yourself and the baby.

  • I never get the shot and can't even tell you how many years I've avoided it without getting the flu. That being said though, I know that the risks are much greater for a pregnant woman to get the flu or H1N1, and I think I will be getting the shots this year. Just in case.

  • my dr urged me to get one last year and i did.  i think i will do it this year, since i am pregnant, i will just request a no mercury vaccine.  i am a teacher in a K-8 building, so i most likely will benefit by having the shot.

  • My doctor is absolutely recommending it.  We are all going to be in our last trimester in the peak of flu season.  If you have ever really had the flu (104 temp, bronchitis etc.) you really DONT want to have this when you are 8 months pregnant.

    Get your flu shots!

  • My midwife suggested I get it, so I will.

  • I'm not getting it.  I didn't get it with my first two pregnancies, and I don't get my boys the Flu shot vaccine, either.  I'm not against vaccinations, but I've always had a negative outcome with the Flu shot.  Everytime I would get the Flu shot I would get sick, and when I went without I was fine.  I also worked around children during this time.

  • I will be getting it this year and DS will be getting his this year as well along with the H1N1. I called our pedi office and they told me the H1N1 shot will be a separate shot again this year

  • Absolutely.

I've had the flu once in my life - I couldn't get off the couch for a solid week, and ended up developing sinus and ear infections from the fluid hanging around after. And this was when I was healthy, and not pregnant or caring for a child.  Not a chance I want to take.

Also, like a PP said, pregnant women are more likely to get it and have serious complications due to a weakened immune system.

Lastly, the protection we get from the flu shot will offer protection to our babies once born.

It's a no brainer to me.

  • I've gotten one every since i starting working in the hospital setting you just get alot of sicky patients with flu like symptoms and last year was even worse. I caught the flu (although mild). Then my husband got sick a little less than a week after his was horrible 10x what mine was. Although the flu shot may not fully protect you from getting sick it definitely lessened my symptoms. Hubbie had 100+temp x 2-3 days even with fever reducers around the clock.

  • I wont be getting one.... I cant remember the last time I got one.

and DD wont be getting one either.

  • I've never had one and do not plan on getting one. In fact, my PCP recommended I don't get a vaccination for anything while pregnant. He and I are on the same page.. I think I'd rather take my chances with flu season than be injected with mercury and still run the risk of getting sick anyways. I understand that there are some versions without the mercury, but how do you really know what is in it? Flu shots are pushed not for public health but for the bottom line of the pharmaceutical companies. My two cents
  • "Most people DO NOT die from the flu, but the highest death rate for people who get the flu are pregnant women."

    This.

I didn't appreciate the mandate from my employer to get shots last year either, but this year being pregnant I will probably do it if they think my H1N1 antibodies are no longer good, and for the seasonal flu.  The craziness last year resulted in nothing significant, which nobody can prove was due to a non-pandemic or to vaccination, but it sure did provide a stimulus to the manufacturers.   Even so, this year, I'm in a different class, and will get the shot.

  • I've never gotten a flu shot before (terrified of needles growing up and since then felt like there were people who needed it worse then I did since supplies are sometimes short). But I'll definitely be getting one this season. A couple of weeks after getting pregnancy I caught a cold my husband had. It put me on my butt for days, and that was just a fairly mild cold. I can't imagine coming down with the full on flu in the 3rd trimester!

Obviously you are not. I've done my research and am still against them.

Obviously I am not... what? I said I was tolerant of a lot of differences in opinion, but science is not one of them. I understand there is some research out there that supports not getting it (and there are medical exceptions for some people), but it's clear the vast majority of scientific research clearly states that flu shots are safer for pregnant women than the flu.

I am heartened to see that most people who responded to this thread, whether or not they had gotten the flu shot in the past, are planning on getting one. Again, collier, I definitely recommend thinking more about this and talking to your trusted medical professionals (not just random people on the Bump!) when making your decision.

Except for the working with kids part, this. For the past 4 yrs I have NOT had the flu shot and haven't gotten it for my kids either, and HAVE NOT HAD IT. Every year before that when I GOT the shot, I'd be sick just a few weeks after. My OB with my first pregnancy told me I didn't have to get the flushot if I didn't want to- and I haven't since! I don't plan on getting it now. I will talk to my doc about it, but unless she says I NEED to, I will not be getting it.

  • My work offers it and I get it.  I have never had the flu and don't want to start.  In addition DH is on steriods and will be doing Remicaid  shortly for colitis.  I would like to have the vaccine so I don't cause him to get sick either due to his low immune system.

  • Due to my asthma, I have always gotten the flu shot. The only year I didn't get it, I got the flu and was sick as a dog for almost three weeks. I never want to feel like that again. For me it's a no-brainer....I'm definitely getting it.

  • Yes. My son starts kindergarten in 2 weeks and my H works with the public. So I want to be protected just in case we are exposed.

  • I will be getting the shot. As a elem. teacher, I feel I am at risk. I have gotten the flu before from work, and it is awful.

Most years I get the shot, and when I don't, I get sick.  DS will get it, as he has since he was old enough for it. Neither one of us has ever had a problem from it.

  • I will definitely be getting it.  I was against them for myself until I had DS.

The LO will be born during flu season and too small to have a flu shot themselves.  By getting the flu shot I am passing the antibodies onto LO in utero and then through my breastmilk.  DS starts preschool this year so God only knows what diseases he'll bring back.  Not chancing it, we're all getting flu shots.

  • As an infectious disease epidmeiologist, definitely! Pregnant women are at highest risk for complications with the baby from flu! Plus, the vaccine is totally safe and encouraged for pregnant women at all stages. Why risk it?

  • Never had the shot, never wanted the shot and fought my job when they tried to tell all of us get the shot or get fired.  If they try to force it again this year, I will still fight it. that goes for both the regular flu and the swine flu shots.
