Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Terrible headaches after d&c, normal???

I had my d&c last Tuesday ( a week tomorrow) and I have recovered pretty well, not much bleeding at all, cramping on and off, bloating has been bad but not terrible, BUT i have had the worst headaches of my life. I am not one to get headaches much at all. A couple a year and never even need meds for it, this has been awful on and off all day and very painful and motrin is barely touching it.

I was thinking originally maybe it was from the anesthesia but now I am thinking maybe hormones. I may call my Dr. tomorrow but thought I would see if anyone here had this issue.

Thanks in advance!

  • I don't have any answers for you but I wouldn't hesitate to call your doctor.  I hope you start feeling better soon!

  • I get really bad headaches each month, I know they're from hormones.  With my first miscarriage it was natural, and I had an insane headache for about 3 days.  I don't think I've ever had a headache like that and nothing would make it go away.  This time I had a D&C last Monday (a week and a day ago) and I had a really bad headache the day of, and then on Wednesday when I passed a rather large clot I had a headache too!  The doctor only gave me Motrin for the D&C and that did nothing for the headaches.  They did go away on their own though.  Good luck, hope that's all it is!
  • I used to be a migraine sufferer but was doing great until my d&c.  I had a 3 day headache about 3 weeks afterward.  I just had a migraine after my first AF as well - when I used to get them.  I think this pregnancy/miscarriage/d&c really does a number on the hormones.  Hopefully everything will even out soon, but I think it is pretty normal to have these kind of symptoms.  Hope you are feeling better soon!
  • I had terrible headaches after my miscarriages which I attributed to falling hormone levels.  I take migraine medicine for them which works wonderfully.  You may want to try Excedrin migraine and/or take a medication along with drinking something with caffeine.

    Hope they go away soon.

  • I started getting really bad headaches every day, starting about a week after my D&C and lasting close to 3 weeks. It's the hormone levels dropping.

  • Thank you thank you thank you! So glad to hear others have experienced this. I was thinking they feel better in the am which makes sense since that is when I have coffee, now off for some meds and coffee and really hoping in the next few weeks they are gone. It truly makes me feel awful for people who get migraines, this has been such terrible pain on top of already not doing so great.

    Thanks again ladies!!
