Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I need help (or just encouragement!)

So DS will not sleep without being swaddled, but he rolled over two nights ago.  I tried to unswaddle him last night and it was a major fail!!!  He woke up every hour screaming.  I finally swaddled him and he slept for the rest of the night.  He was so exhausted by this time.  Do I just need to toughen up and stick it out?  I've always heard that they will let you know when they are ready to be done, but I don't know if DS ever will.  He will be 5 months old in a little over a week, but he was a month early.  His adjusted age would be 4 months.  Any suggestions to help with the deswaddle?  TIA!

Re: I need help (or just encouragement!)

  • try doing it slowly. unswaddle one arm at a time, or just his legs. or you could just try unswaddling for naps.

  • Can you swaddle him loosely so when he rolls over he can get his arms out if he wanted to? Then you might not be so freaked out that he was rolling over while swaddled and he will progressively just get out of it until he doesn't need it anymore.

  • We just started the deswaddling process and did one arm out since Thurs and both arms out since Sun.  The one arm out was definitely much better for his sleep but I figured he has to get used to both arms out so we are just sticking with it and it's getting better. Unfortunately he needs his paci to sleep and with both arms out, he keeps taking it out and can only sometimes get it back in. Anyway, I would do it gradually if I were you.

  • Thanks ladies!!  I am going to try to only swaddle one arm at his next nap!  He has never taken a paci, so I thought he would enjoy having his arms out (he is a thumb sucker).  I think he gets so excited that he can't control his hands and they just go crazy rubbing and scratching his face. Thanks again for the help and advice!!!

    Thanks!

  • Ok, I'm going to be different I guess. We just stopped swaddling DD, because she was waking up every hour fighting to get out. I am a firm believer that they will let you know when they are ready, and to try it before they are, is just torture for everyone. If you're worried about rolling, try using a sleep positioner. We used one, as well as some tightly rolled receiving blankets to keep K from rolling.

    Good Luck Momma!!

DH and I just talked about this last night!  We both agree but were concerned with the rolling.  I never thought about using a positioner.  It is definitely worth a try to see if it will hold DS in place!  Thanks!

  • It's recommended to stop swaddling when LO can roll over, break loose, or doesn't want it.  Sadly, it's time to stop.  Even if he's not acting ready, it certainly wouldn't be worth the safety risk to me.  Try weaning him gradually: one arm out, then both out, then sleepsack.  I really LOVE the Halo sleepsacks, and highly recommend them.  Really helped with the transition, and a safe way to use a blanket.
