Please Recommend a Breast Pump

I will be going back to work after maternity leave with this baby and will need a high-quality and efficient breast pump to use at work.  Since I teach, I won't have a lot of time during the day for pumping, so I'll need it to get the job done when I am able to pump.  Please recommend - thank you!

Re: Please Recommend a Breast Pump

  • I use the medela PISA and love it. I also work in the schools so I understand the need for quick pumping. I get anywhere from 10 oz (morning) to 6 ounces in about 10 minutes.

  • Also had a good experience with the PISA. If I could do it over again, I'd spring for the Freestyle (but I'm a sahm).

This, except I did go back to work for about 8 weeks so I used the pump several times a day while she was in daycare.

  • I used the PISA at work and the rented Symphony at home. Having two allowed me to leave the PISA at work -- that makes things easier for me.

Another hint: buy multiple pump assemblies (the cones and bottles); bag as many of these as you have at-work pumping sessions; then, you save doing the dishes. Just unpack a new one at each session, bag it when you're done, and save the washing up for home.

If you do this, don't forget to pack caps. :) I would assemble the cones on the bottles, bag them, and then forget caps for the bottles. Doh!

  • I have the Medela Freestyle and I love it!!  It is super small but powerful.  It is def worth the price!
  • I used the PISA - 5-6 times each day.  It held up really well.

I asked to pump in the hospital and they brought me a set of parts that fit the Medela.  It worked out because I had to take them home and ended up with two sets.  It made things nice when washing dishes.

  • Another Medela PISA user.  If I had to do it all over again I would get the freestyle it is just more compact.

  • Pump In Style Advanced here too.  It's worked fine for me.

I also ditto the PP's on getting a couple of extra sets of attachments so you dont have to wash as often.  I have a ton of them because I got a bunch from a friend so I can go a couple of days without washing.

I actually use the same set of cones/bottles through the day at work, just wipe them off and put them in the fridge between pumps.  This way I don't have to wash as often.  I take regular feeding bottles and pour the milk in after each pump so when I get home, the bottles are pretty much ready for the next day.

  • I use the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra pump.  The shields are very comfortable and it usually only takes 10-15 minutes.  I don't work outside of the home but I believe it would be easy to transport.

Me too.  I pump in 10 minutes and love it.  Worth the price.  You also might watch for a "Just for Friends" sale (they should be coming up) and just buy the new parts.  My sister did this and saved a ton.

  • Another PISA user here.  I had a great experience and used it for 13 months!

  • Another PISA user here. I'm using it now for the 2nd time around and it works just as good as it did last year. It gets the job done quickly (got 9.5 oz this morning in 10 min.)

What a good idea. Where did you rent the symphony from?

    Thanks!

i used the symphony and loved it.  i'm a sahm so didn't have to travel with it.  i rented mine from the hospital i delivered at, hermann in the medical center, they brought me several extra assemble kits so i had extra.  you can also rent them from a woman's work, although i looked at the price for both and the hospital was less expensive.

    good luck

  • I'd rent a Symphony from the hospital until you see if breastfeeding works out for you instead of spending a few hundred up front and maybe not using it.  I used the Symphony and borrowed a friend's PISA.  Both worked fine, but I only breastfed for 5 weeks before throwing in the towel due to low supply.
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!
