I've been taking my 3mo old swimming every morning for the past two weeks and she's fine. some people really over react. I'd rather have a kid that knows how to swim and isnt afraid of the water thank you.

It's just another reason that it's a PITA that we have babies so close in age to eachother. Now she's got FIL all freaked out and he doesn't like us to take Dylan in the pool. Sigh.

Though not addressing exactly what she said, I can understand the worry. My H is a competitive swimmer and he has all sorts of weird ailments from the chlorine. Obviously his exposure is well above what any a normal person would have, but I still worry about my daughter!
ETA: He takes her swimming all the time so obviously I am not worrying that much! When we win the lottery and build a pool it will be saline.
She's overreacting, but to some extent it's true. Chemicals can pass through the skin from cosmetics, lotion, and yes, water. Just one example -- it's not recommended for women to use retinol creams during pregnancy b/c the chemicals penetrate the skin and get into the body.
I'm sure swimming causes far too small an amount to be worried about, but it's not completely crazy to be aware of what your baby's skin comes into contact with.
My pedi told me the same thing. He said while our skin works as a barrier to the outside world, LO's is more like a sieve and allows things to flow through. He discouraged the use of sunscreen and swimming.
Ya, I don't think this is so crazy. That's why I try not to use lotions with parabens, etc. Chemicals can seep through the skin. We took DS #2 swimming once this summer so I'm not anal about it but I wouldn't want him to go swimming all the time either. He has a lifetime to soak up all the chemicals in our food, water, air, etc. so I'm in no rush.

Well, huh. I seriously thought she was BSC.

My pedi said the same thing--she said to avoid lotions too

Heck yeah, I did! Every.single.day!
I've heard of people's pedi's suggesting they wait until 6 months, but never for the reason she gave.
You think that's faint worthy? I also ate lunch meat and painted my nails!
You have GOT to be kidding me!

I hope she doesn't cuddle her LO while she is wearing makeup, then.

Ha! Your three month old being fine after daily swimming in chlorinated water does not mean it's a smart practice.
