The head of HR (it's a two-person department at our firm) just sent me an email to apologize for my being "accidentally" dropped from the company insurance plan right after I told my boss about the baby!
Umm, thanks for stepping in NOW, after several weeks of my cc-ing you on repeat emails that this was going on.
I am very tempted to write her back and tell her what the people in my chain of command had to say - basically, told me to either leave the Coach bag at home and go to a free clinic or to put my prenatal care on Visa, but STFU either way. I'm going to let that cool off for a day before I try to respond.
Ugh, this company just disgusts me more and more with their unethical behavior! I can't wait to quit.
Re: Holy CRAP (F/U to insurance debacle)
Thank you so much for saying that! I was getting flamed to hell and back on Working Moms when I asked for advice.
It is illegal by federal law what my employer did, but I think most employers assume that most pg women won't have the balls and/or wherewithal to stand up and call them on their crap!
My best friend is expecting also; she was asked to please check her email during her maternity leave (illegal also) and her boss suggested it might be "fun" for her to study for some professional certifications "while the baby's napping".
So many of these companies need to just get their heads out of their butts.
Um. WTF. People are so rude. I would wait a day, cool off. Weren't you the girl whose boss overheard you bad mouthing the company because of how they handled it? I'd probably hold off on saying anything else negative about the company. Effed up, or not.

I still can't believe that happened to you. Definitely taking a day to cool off is a good idea before responding.
So did they reimburse or fix the claims?
It took over a month of me "annoying" both our benefits department (which is outsourced) and our HR department daily, culminating with my having to physically go to HQ and tell them, "Please let me know whether you're going to fix this, or whether I need to retain an attorney about this matter" before the issue was resolved.
Clearly, this was no "error"; the fact that I had to go through this ordeal clearly indicates those MFs knew what they were doing... If you're in your 20s and 30s and our company hires you, you're either a single woman, or a married man.
That is terrible! Again, I'm sorry. I didn't see your initial post so I assumed that it was truly just a weird error. Now the comment about the free clinic and putting your prenatal care on Visa is making more sense to me. Good grief!
