Tell me about Cloth Diapers

I'm interested in maybe doing some cloth diapers but not sure what brand to even research.

If you use them - what kind do/did you use?

When did you start using them (age of baby)?

What do you need to buy - the diaper and inserts - right?

How much should I expect to spend per diaper and where can you find a deal on them?

Re: Tell me about Cloth Diapers

  • I know some Moms that use them will chime in, but I found a lot of info on kellyscloset.com.  They have all the different kinds and have a list of approx how many you need at each age, how much you can expect to spend (and save) and describes the different kinds.  They also talk about how to wash them etc.

As far as you're questions: You can use them starting at birth if you want, some prefer to wait until they're older.

What you need to buy depends on the diaper, some diapers are all in one and all you need to buy is the diaper, some need covers over them so you'd buy the diaper and a cover.

You can make this as cheap or expensive as you want to.  You can get some prefolds for a couple of dollars, get some pins or snappis and some cheap covers.  You can also get some organic, all in one, one size fits all type for up to $24 a piece.

  • I'm using cloth diapers right now.  I started when Phoebe was about a week old.  I choose to rent the diapers for the first 3 months because they grow out of those ones so fast and I didn't want to have to spend so much money in the beginning.  I am using KLO (these are fitted) with Thirstie duo covers (I bought these).  It cost me about $115 for everything I needed for the first 3 months.  After that I plan on using a combination of things including BumGenius 4.0 and FuzziBunz.  I want to use diapers that grow with her from now on so I don't have to buy anything else.  And I love these diapers because they are easy to use and really cute.  There are LOTS of great websites out there including JilliansDrawers, pinstripes and polkadots, abbys lane.  Also check out the Eco Friendly Family board because they are a wealth of information.  Just by lurking on that board I found out everything I could ever want to know.

  • Ditto everything April said. Next time around I will use Kissaluvs and covers for the newborn stage. We started using cloth at 2 weeks, when we ran out of the disposeables we already had. After she was put of newborn sizes dipes, I did the trial from Jillians Drawers. I highly recommend that before you invest too much in one system. It helps to try them out to see what you like and what fits your kid. I use mostly FuzziBuns one size and BumGenius, with a couple randoms thrown in. I chose the pocket diapers because I can put the inserts in ahead of time and then they are as easy as disposeables for DH and the sitter, but they dry faster than the all in ones. There are regularly people selling diapers on the Swap Spot board, and you can also check Spots Corner and Diaper Swappers. They are mostly used but you can sometimes get them in excellent condition, and sometimes new.
  • I use the old school method mostly - I just didn't feel like investing a gajillion dollars into cloth if I wasn't going to stick with it (I wasn't 100% sure at the time).

I just bought plain old gerber cloth diapers (people usually use these as burp cloths), pins and "rubber pants" aka plasic diaper covers.  The packs of cloth diapers are cheap - like $10 for 12 of them (maybe even less).  The pins are like $2 and the rubber pants I buy 2 packs every time she moves up a size and they're $4.50/pack (there are 3 covers in each pack).  Now since she's wetting WAY more heavily, I also bought the cloth g-diaper inserts and line each diaper with them - they're like SUPER absorbent.   They ran me $26 for a pack of 6 (and I have 2 packs).

CDing is really not bad at all.  I also have a gdiaper system that I inherited and I like it, but my chic's got VERY fat thighs and they're a bit to tight on them for my liking.

HTH and as always, since there are a bunch of us here who CD, feel free to ask away!

ETA: I still use sposies for going out and sometimes for overnight.
