My 2yr old DS is developmentally delayed. He has made remarkable progress with gross motor and receptive language but has a severe expressive speech delay. On the recommendation of a friend, I picked up a copy of the book "The Late Talker; What to do if your Child isn't Talking Yet", by Marilyn Agin, Lisa Feng, and Malcolm Nicholl. There is a chapter that discusses the benefits of supplementing your child with fatty acids. It sounded very interesting and seemed to have no real downside, as long as your child does not have a fish allergy (which I know my son doesn't). I realize that this is not a miracle cure, but was interested to know if anyone had any experience with fatty acids, or any other dietary changes for kids with developmental delays, especially speech delays.
Also, if you know anything good or bad about the book, please feel free to comment on that too!
Thanks!
Re: Anyone supplement with DHA / Omega3 / Fatty acids? (DS has severe expressive speech delay)
We absolutely do use the fish oil (Nordic Naturals) and have seen great benefits along with other supps that our naturopathic dr recommended based on DS's lab work. Fish oil is great for all children, special needs or not, it "feeds" the brain. You can't go wrong trying it, unless your child has fish allergies, of course. My son finds the strawberry flavor quite tasty and has no problem taking it.
Overall, I've seen great improvements after we started this regimen, though they were pretty subtle at first, but steady. Nay-sayers will probably think that it's mostly due to the more conventional therapies, but I know what I know. They don't see my kid. I swear by it.
I have no knowledge of the book, though.
