School-Aged Children

What do you pack in your kids lunches?

I have thought about doing a bento lunch for L at least 2 days a week.  Depends on how into it I get and how time consuming they are.  If I find its not too hard I will do them more often if L wants to.  I will allow him to pick days he wants to pack his lunch based on the school lunch menu.

If we find that I cant do a bento and he wants to pack what do you include in your kids lunches.

Re: What do you pack in your kids lunches?

  • She always has a yogurt (Danimals or one of the tubes), a fruit of some kind (cut up and generally with dip), veggies of some kind (again cut up), something with protein (sandwich fingers, homemade lunchable, ect.), and then a treat (a cookie, small piece of chocolate, a pudding, jello, ect.).  She always has milk to drink with lunch.

It's seems almost like one of those buneto lunches, but she eats it and that's all that matters to me!!

  • I'm doing a bento box style lunch box primarily (except on soup days) but here is a list I made of things to put in it that she'll eat:

hotdogs, PB&J sandwiches, mac-n-cheese, noodles w/ butter & parm, corn dog, bagle w/ cream cheese, bagel sandwich, ham sandwich, cream cheese on raisin bread sandwich, graham cracker/PB sandwiches, soups, turkey sandwich, roll-ups/wraps w/ meat & veggies, PB&J, cream cheese & veggies, PB & honey, nutella, sunflower butter & jelly, almond butter & jelly, crackers & cheese,  left overs, jello cup, applesauce, cup, cottage cheese & fruit, rice & veggies, pasta salad, animal crackers, salad, chips, pretzels, pretzel chips, sunflower seeds, yogurt w/ sprinkles, fruit, granola or chocolate chips, steamed/grilled veggies, celery sticks/carrot sticks/pepper sticks/cucumber & dip (hummus or ranch), celery w/ PB, celery w/ cream cheese, fruits of all kinds, fruit breads (banana, apple, zuchinni, etc), melon balls, trail mix, granola bars, cereal, waffles w/ PB, nuts, raisins, dried fruits, cookies, muffins, snack crackers (like gold fish, teddy grams).

    Hope that helps.

  • My DD hates sandwiches. HATES them. Refuses to eat them. She loves hot lunch, but at $3.50/day we can't get them for her daily. And when I pack soup, ravioli, etc. in her funtainer she still complains it's "not hot enough" and so she barely eats it.

Therefore, I've had to get creative...

Some days, I pack dry cereal in her (soup) Funtainer and milk in her straw Funtainer. She pours the milk on the cereal and voila! lunch. (On days like this I make sure her breakfast is more well-balanced, so she's not eating cereal 2x/day.)

We do bagels and cream cheese. Pita bread and hummus. Carrot sticks and ranch. Frozen grapes (well, they're thawed by lunchtime). Cinnamon raisin bread with butter. Sometimes she'll take lunchmeat or cheese in Ziploc baggies. She's totally hit-or-miss on what she wants or what she'll eat.

ETA: The cereals she takes are not Lucky Charms, Cocoa Krispies, etc. They're like Kix, Shredded Wheat, etc.

  • Today's lunch was cheese & whole grain crackers, celery w/ peanut butter, grapes, whole grain goldfish, a pudding cup, and apple juice. Friday was a peanut butter sandwich, apple, carrot sticks, a few cheetos, 2 oreos, and milk.

DS is a really picky eater, so I'm kind of limited in what I can give him and have him actually eat it.

How do you keep the above items warm? Or do the kids eat them room temperature? I'd like to be able to send things like noodles or leftovers, but DS won't eat them if they're not hot.

  • DS has a turkey and cheese/ham and cheese sandwich, apple or banana, yogurt, baby carrots and occasionally a treat. Apple juice in his thermos. He has pretty much the same lunch every day (and did all last year) but he eats it all and never complains :)

What is a bento lunch???? I've never heard of this.

My kids typically get PB&J, a drink, and a snack (usually raisins, apples, or a veggie). we're not very creative with lunche around here. :X

  • I've been packing DD's lunch at daycare for a couple years now. It's usually a sandwich, fruit, and veggie. She loves yogurt too. They have a microwave so I can have them heat veggies; otherwise the only fresh veggies she'll eat are carrots and sometimes cucumbers. I also sometimes make our own lunchables with whole wheat crackers, deli meat, and cheese slices.
