Pregnant after a Loss

So are you really more fertile after a m/c?

Hi ladies,

I hope to be joining you here soon.  Just wondering if you are really more fertile after a loss?  I have heard so many different things.  I guess I'm just trying to hold onto anything positive.  TIA.

Re: So are you really more fertile after a m/c?

  • I've heard that before (this was my grandmother's explanation for me getting pg again quickly) but I think it really depends on the person. Maybe for some people it does (I got pg the first cycle we tried again), but there are other ladies that took a few months to a few years.

  • Well, I think it really depends. Some women here got pg immediately after a m/c while it took longer for others. Some of women have very long cycles or do not ovulate regularly, so that can affect how quickly they get pregnant. I got pregnant immediately after each of my losses and we had been ttc for 5 cycles before we got our first bfp.

It also depends on how long your doctor advises you to wait to ttc again. My doctor suggested I wait one cycle after each of the losses, but I know that other doctors will ask you to wait 3-6 months. This often depends on the length and type (molar, cp, ect.) of pregnancy. I would talk with your doctor about it and see what they advise and take it from there.

  • I don't have much to compare it to as I did get pregnant my first time trying (ended in a missed m/c) and then on our first try after my D&C (before AF).  I've heard that you are more fertile because of all the hormones and your body being prepared to be pregnant.

  • I have heard that too but I'm not sure if it's a true fact or not. I think it probably depends on the person.  I got pregnant the first cycle trying both times.  I've heard of other people having no trouble before the m/c and then having a hard time after and vice versa.  I think it also may depend on the type of m/c you have - natural or D&C/E.

I'm so sorry for your losses.  Congrats on your LO!!!  For me, I ovulate regularly, DH has no issues, etc.  We are unexplained IF.  RE says we could do nothing and it could happen on its own or maybe not (how's that for answers. Stick out tongue) We tried for 2 1/2 years and finally got pregnant with injectables and IUI.  I was so happy when we got pregnant because I actually thought my body just didn't know how to!

After the D&C for a missed m/c in June, RE gave me no restrictions.  He said we could start trying right away, didn't even need to wait for AF. Needless to say, we didn't even bd until July b/c I just didn't feel ready and then it was o painful in the beginning.  Otherwise, I'm going back in September to start injectables again.

I got AF in August and we are finally returning to our old selves again (bding wise).  I used CBEFM and we bedded the 2 days I was ovulating.  Wishful thinking I guess hoping this cycle I get KU this cycle on my own w/o any outside help.

  • I had also heard this, and was curious so I asked my doctor at my check-up after my D&C and she said there is no real medical reason why you would be more fertile, she thinks its more that people are really focused on getting pregnant again after a loss (charting, etc...) and thus it seems to happen quicker.  And you hear about the success stories of people getting pregnant right away but not the bad stories.

  • I asked my OB this exact question after one of my losses. He said that there is no reason why you would be more fertile because it still takes the sperm to go through your tubes, swim the right way and fertilize the egg. He said each month you have a 15% chance of getting pregnant and that does not increase after you have a mc. With that said, I was pregnant 5 times and all but 1 I got pregnant the 2nd month of trying. He said we were very lucky and fertile. GL
  • I had a miscarriage in July and I never got my period because I was pregnant again, so it's definitely possible. We just continued to try right after I stopped bleeding and got a BFP 6 weeks later. :-) Good luck!
  • I have heard that and decided to ask my OB.  She said it is not true and the fact is either you are or aren't fertile.  There is nothing physiological that increases your chances of pg after a m/c.  That was her take.  I tend to think that makes sense.

  • In my experience, I was fertile after my loss.  I got pregnant before I got AF.  I did have a natural miscarriage and stopped bleeding fairly quickly so I don't know if my body was just ready to get back to business right away.

The same thing happened to me.  I can't say for sure that I was *extra* fertile but I got pregnant again before AF arrived after my early natural m/c.  My midwife said that the cervix can still be a little bit open after the m/c which may attribute to getting pregnant more easily afterward.  But I can say that I experienced noticeable pregnancy symptoms very early this time and knew I was pregnant days before I got a bfp at 9dpo.  I agree that it seemed like my body was ready to get back to business.

  • I don't know why but I got pg my first cycle without protection, even though I didn't have sex anywhere around the time that I ovulated.  Everything was still off ovulation wise, I ovulated late and got KU'd. It may be harder to chart and time b/c your cycle may be off, but in my case it got me pg a lot faster!
