Drop off lines at school

Another post got me thinking about this.

Does yours have one?

Ours doesn't.  My girls take the bus most days.  I try not to drive them since it's a real pain to get both of them and DS out of the car and into school.  There are never any parking spots close to the school.

I would love for them to have a drop off line but realistically it will never happen since there is no space for one.

Re: Drop off lines at school

  • Yes, our school does have one. The parking is awful at the school and the line goes around the parking for people who walk-in to get their children. We walked-in last year but this year he wants to do the line. So, now instead of having to park in front of the school we'll get in line that sits around the main parking lot for the school. ::sigh:: Either way sucks though.

  • It's not official drop off line, but traffic only goes one way.  It's horrible.  I'd love to have someone out there directing traffic to make it flow better, but that would never happen.  It would work better if parents used a parking spot to park and drop their kids off rather than pull up to the curb, park, get out, walk their kid into school, and then wonder why it takes them 20 minutes to get out (most people will start a second line around the parked cars).
  • Yes--we have carpool lines for drop off & pick up.  It's great, especially since I have younger siblings.  Saves me, especially in the bad weather!
  • Both my kids' schools have drop off lines that are more or less efficient and safe.  My kids mostly ride the bus, but I drop DD off when she's carting in a big project or something similar.

I would dread dealing with that traffic jam every day, though!  It's so much easier to wave good bye to the bus!

  • We have a drop-off line of sorts. Last year, the kids were dropped off at the playground, so the parents just drove through the parking lot loop to the gate for the playground and dropped the kids off. Now they're going straight into the building, so we just pull up at the front entrance of the building and drop them off there. I wait for DS to actually get inside the building, but lots of the parents don't.

We don't have a pick-up line. If you want to pick your kid up, you have to walk inside and wait in the lobby.

I should also mention that DS's school is really small, less than 100 kids, so that certainly makes things easier.

  • We do have a drop off line. It's really not too bad either. We get there a bit on the earlier side of it though (7 or a few minutes before) and the first bell is at 7:05 (school starts at 7:15).

  • Our school has them but I'd rather park and bring my girls in.  My oldest goes to a different school though and I usually pick her up in the drop off zone because by the time we drive out to her school my youngest is usually sound asleep.

It's interesting you say this - because I am on the opposite end of the spectrum!

I just found out last Thursday (mind you, less than a week from when school starts) - that we probably get NO bus service. 90% of the school gets NO bus service. It's all car-line. I am SO mad about this. I was looking forward to putting the kids on the bus. It was an experience I had growing up - I looked forward to my kids having the same experience!

My youngest is an ESE student (special needs) and he's only 3 so he gets bus service automatically (although they messed that up, and said it won't be cleared up for 1-2 weeks). They said because we are 1.97 miles away from the school (and anything under 2 miles gets NO bus service... forget the fact that we're in a city pretty much, and walking that distance is NOT safe) that my oldest (5) will not get bus service. They are going to see next week - if there is ROOM on the bus, then they may be able to squeeze my oldest on the bus as well.

I hope so. Because I am almost 9 months pregnant and I can't fit behind the wheel of my car much anymore!! I wish the school had more busing. I am not a fan of the car line.

  • Yes, but I never used it. I always parked about a block away from the campus and walked. Most days, the same cars would be idling in the same spot by the time we walked back. I plan to do the same this year.
