Anyone have anything good to say about IUDs?

A few months ago I had a pulmonary embolism, and today at my annual lady exam I was told that an IUD is the only form of non-permanent birth control available to me.  It seems in the past that I've only read negative things about IUDs, and honestly, my IRL friends and their acquaintences have only negative things to say, too.  So, have any of you lovely ladies out there had an IUD and liked it?

  • I have mirena, and I love it. Several of my friends have IUD's, and they're all happy with them. If you can't take the pill, you may have to get paragard instead of mirena since it's non-hormonal. One of my good friends has had paragard three times and loves it. I would have gotten it if I weren't afraid of the super heavy periods it can sometimes give. One benefit of paragard over mirena is that it won't affect your libido.

This. I love Mirena and have had no problems so far. AF is still around, but about every 1.5 months and super light and short. I didn't gain any weight and everyone I know that has it, loves it. I was still bf'ing and didn't want to take the pill so it was about my only option. I have heard of some people having pain after having it put in, but my was fine.

  • I'm a big fan of Mirena.  No issues.
  • I have Paragard and have no issues with it.  The first couple months are a pain cause you bleed irregularly but other than that, it's great!
  • I have a paraguard and I love it!  I was taken off hormonal bc 4.5 years ago because my normally low (borderline dangerously low) blood pressure was suddenly on the high end.  Within a week of going off bcp it was back to my normal.  Then I ended up with blood pressure issues during both pregnancies, so I've been told hormonal bc will basically never be an option for me again.  I've had paraguard since late September and I love it!  I'm completely unaware it's there, don't have  to think about it at all, and am not worried that I will end up pregnant (the failure rate is incredibly low according to my OB).  Insertion was easy and not too painful and I love that it's 100% hormone free since hormonal bc ruined my libido and this doesn't at all.  I would highly recommend it!

  • Unfortunately no. I'm going in today to have my Mirena removed for the second time in10 months. The first time it came out on it's own. This time it's out of the uterus and "free floating". No idea when it happened and DH and I have been very busy lately so i'm crossing my fingers no BFP :(

On the upside, it was great not having to worry about taking a pill, and a couple other friends of mine who have it say it's been great.

  • I've had Paraguard for close to two years now with no problems other than heavier-than-usual periods.
  • I'm on a non-hormonal IUD and have had zero issues.

  • I have Paragaurd and love it.  AF still normal and no issues here.  I'm surprised you've heard so many negative things...So much easier than the pill and non-hormonal.  It's good up to 10 years.
