Opinions on boy name "Achilles"

Okay, so my DH has his mind made up that he is totally in love with the name Achilles if we have a boy. I think it is an interesting name, but am trying to worry about the child and if this is a good idea.

What do you all think about the name? I need honest answers please.

He does know the story behind this, right? As in, the Achilles heel? Not a good connotation.

I'd pick a stronger name for my DS. I just don't like this one. Sorry.

No, I don't like Achilles. At least not for a first name. MAYBE a middle name. Any other Greek or Roman names we can sway him to? Like Perseus maybe? Much more potential there. Good luck to you!

I think it's a terrible idea, and I'm the one who told my husband to put Odysseus on the boy list. Achilles is NOT an admirable hero, and to most people not familiar with mythology, all it brings up is the term "achilles heel" which is synonymous with weakness!

I don?t really care for this name, but I feel kind of the opposite from the pp point of view ? and tend to think of Achilles as a strong name. Maybe I?m wrong, but wasn?t Achilles a great warrior and a hero of the Trojan war? He had no vulnerabilities except for his heel, which is how he was finally defeated, and where the term ?Achille?s Heel? comes from. So it wasn?t that Achilles himself was weak, it was just his one weakness, kwim? Anywho, just my two cents. Smile

Yes, that is the whole story. Unfortunately, 99% of people only know the "Achilles Heel" part, which implies weakness. That was the part I meant to refer to in my OP.

I don't care for it at all. It wouldn't be too bad as a middle name, but I couldn't imagine carrying that name around as a first name. Yikes!!!

I was actually thinking the opposite of a lot of the posters-I was thinking it was a super strong masculine name because he was such a great warrior in Greek mythology. But for a name for a child? NMS. Seems like too much. Like you're trying too hard to be cool.

When I think of Achilles I get a sexy Brad Pitt image...that being said, I dont like the name, but I dont see that it is synonymous solely with a weakness.

I think that Maximus Danger could be the perfect name for your husband! And it has a cute nn (Max) that you can enjoy as well. This is a great suggestion, BraveAngel!

My husband thinks Achilles is AWESOME, too. Ugh. I like the ultra-masculine ancient names though. Why not Hector? Same story, better guy, better name. There's also Octavian, Lucian--someone mentioned Atticus, which is my favorite boys' name.

Someone else mentioned Persius. If you want my opinion, it sounds like it could WAY too easily become the taunt "p u s sy-us."
