I think we have our name! WDYT?

So, as I've posted before we had our heart set on the name Grey Alexander until we realized that his initials would be GAS.  Argh!  We've spent the last 4 weeks trying to come up with something we like as well and I thought we had decided on Grey Sebastian, but then DH tells me he doesn't like it.  It was back to the drawing board...but I think I may have come up with a great solution and here it is:

Grey Eleksander

This is an actual way to spell Alexander (it's Polish I think) so I didn't make it up.  It preserves our original fav without the GAS.

WDYT?  Please be honest-I can take it.  Wink

Re: I think we have our name! WDYT?

  • I like it.  It's an interesting way of spelling it.  Plus who cares if someone doesn't like the kids middle name (spelling of it or otherwise), how often is is used anyways?

  • Typically I don't like non-traditional spellings of names, but since it is a middle name I think it is fine.  If you love the name, go for it.

I would go with Grey Alexander.

I think it is a nice name and who cares about the GAS. Unless you will be getting a lot of things monogrammed I don't think it will come up.

    I agree with this.

  • I do love the name Grey, we are more than likely going to use it as a MN.. and I like the way it sounds with Alexander, but the strange spelling just kinda turns me off.. if the initials bother you that much maybe you could find a new MN altogheter. does Alexander have any special meaning, or do you just like the sound of it?

  • I wouldn't worry about the initials. Your son will not typically be addressed by his initials.

And I'm not a fan of the odd spelling.

  • Or maybe you could consider Grey Xander ... has the same feel as Alexander, but maybe not as good of a 'flow'.  I also agree that, while I'm usually not a fan of unusual spellings, it doesn't bother me for a middle name.  And although people don't use initials often, I think you're smart to avoid the GAS thing ... my parents almost gave me a middle name that would have given me the initials ASS .. so glad they changed their mind :)  By the way, I LOVE the name Grey ... it was on our short list for boys.  And my husband's name is Alexander so I also love that :)  Good choice!!

We really just love the sound of it.  I don't typically like strange spelling either, but given that we're so stuck on that particular name it seemed to make more sense then continuing to try and find another mn.

    Ditto.

  • I vote for the more traditional spelling.
  • I am not a fan of spelling it with an E just doesnt look right to me, but I do understand why you wouldnt want his Initials GAS, and I have to disagree with other posters that say nobody will notice, because once he is of school age, no later then middle school his class mates will get a kick out of that one, and Gas will be his name for the remainder of his school time.

  • I would only spell it that way if you are actually Polish.  Otherwise, it just looks kind of silly.  I agree with you, though, that I would not use GAS for initials.  Sorry, I know this is not what you wanted to hear!  :(

  • Not a fan of that spelling unless you ARE Polish, in which case you'd probably know for sure if that was the origin.  I'd worry about GAS too.  There is still time, I'd keep looking for an alternative :)

  • Eh, I'd keep looking. I wouldn't want my kid to have the initials GAS. It will definitely come up when he's older.

Also, unless you're Polish and trying to honor your roots, I don't like the alternate spelling. It looks like you're trying to be too yooo-neek. The name Grey is NMS - I don't get the whole Grey/Greyson thing lately.

What about switching the names around - Alexander Grey and just calling him Grey?

  • We are going with Grey for our little girl's middle name. I love it! I think you can spell the middle name however you want to.
  • I like Grey Alexander. I dont think the initials should be a problem unless, like PP, you have a lot of things monogramed. I also think of first and last as initials mostly, not middle names.
  • I believe that Aleksander is the usual Polish spelling of Alexander. I have a friend from Poland and her name is Aleksandra.

And for monogramming, traditionally you put the last name in the middle so it would look like this: gSa.

I like the name Alexander. I have weird middle name and none of the kids ever knew it, so I was never made fun of. I would just use Alexander, if I were you.

I have to agree with this...sorry but I don't like either. I would keep looking.

This.  I love the name Grey.  I like Grey Alexander, but not if it means his initials are GAS.  One kid is going to realize what his initials are, then tell all the other kids.  Kids are cruel.  And I don't like the funky spelling... unless you are Polish.  What about Alexander Grey and then he goes by his middle name?  Or just go with a whole different middle name.

  • Yep, I agree that kids are mean.  The "GAS" will definitely come up at some point, probably middle school, likely earlier!  I also like the idea of switching the two names and just calling him Grey.  The unusual spelling is NMS but if you love it then you should do it!

  • Thanks ladies for all of your input. Still not sure what we're going to do.  I think I have a bit of a one track mind sometimes...once I love something there's no going back.

  • I personally like the traditional spelling of Alexander better. I don't know why, but Eleksander looks a little off to me.

I do LOVE the name Grey!!!

  • I like Grey,  That is different.  And I like Alexander as a name as well.  They sound good together but I am not a fan of the different spelling.  Maybe you could give him two middle names?  or maybe make his middle name Zander instead of Alexander?  Overall... you have to like the name and not care what  others think.  You are giving your baby their first identifier....  you should love it!

  • I think it's good to get rid of the "GAS." On the other hand, I don't really like Eleksander. Then again, maybe it's ok to have a middle name (as opposed to a first name) with an uncommon spelling. I like Sebastian more, but obviously your husband needs to be on board. Eleksander is a good backup, but if I were you I'd keep considering alternatives.

I noticed you said you were stuck on Alexander/Eleksander. Could it be a first name instead? I personally like Alexander better than Grey, but that's just me. A lot of people go by their middle names if you still wanted to call the child Grey.

I do feel pretty strong about getting rid of GAS even though other people think it's ok.
