Pregnant w/o insurance, what to do?

I just found out that I am pregnant. After a LONG 1 year journey of trying...it finally happened! One problem...during our journey, I lost my job where I had some of the most amazing health insurance. Now, at my new job, the insurance wasn't remotely close to being affordable, so I elected out (at least until January)...so now I have NO insurance and we don't qualify for Medicaid (at least I don't think. If anybody knows the qualifications for a family of 4 expecting #5, please do tell.) Any suggestions out there? I want to be happy about expecting...but how can I be when I am freaking out about the lack of insurance.

  • I think because you do not have insurance and are expecting you do qualify for Medicaid. You will need to contact your local Medicaid office. They will not deny you because you are pregnant. HTH

  • Yikes! I don't want to beat up on you because it's too late now, but why wouldn't you have gotten insured knowing that you were trying to have a baby? Medicaid is a good option. I don't know if you can get on under your husband's plan now that you have a "pre-existing condition." Also, are your kids insured? If not, you can get them insured under Florida KidCare, just fyi.

    Good luck!

  • My friend who lost her job and didn't have an insurence, was able to get FL Medicad, but with that said, she only got emeregncy that covered her for 60 days, after that she made a deal with the doctor who took the medicaid, and than went to the hopital at delivery time and the hospital has to cover the birth.

She was and is still a very healthy person who had an unplanned pregnancy at 40. Her baby is pretty healthy however. But she has to pay out of pocket for the baby and herself. She was able to get emeregncy medicad again, after the birth for six weeks.

She was able to get wic.

With all this said, I would never go without insurence, sometimes we have to give up other things we want but medical insurance is something that is important. Maybe you can get on your husbands. IF not you will have to get on yours in Jan.

Information regarding the income and asset limits for Medicaid for low income families and children can be found on the Family Related Medicaid Income/Asset Limits.

  • You should definitely qualify for medicaid. I have it myself. Pretty much being pregnant qualifies you in and of itself. The coverage is pretty good surprisingly, and I found a great group of doctors that work with it at Genesis Healthpark w/TGH. I have also qualified for foodstamps and WIC. Seeing that I'm doing this alone I'll take all the help I can get. You can apply online here, https://www.myflorida.com/accessflorida/. It took about 45 days for me to be approved. While I was waiting for approval I went to the health department to see an OB/GYN. I didn't have to pay anything since my medicaid approval was pending. The care was better than expected, but take a book because you'll have to wait a while, maybe some music too so you don't have to deal with all the screaming kids, lol.
  • Update: I spoke with my HR department at work and told them the situation. THANKFULLY that were having TONS of issues with the system the month I enrolled for my benefits, so they extended the health insurance to me. Thank god!!!! I don't believe I qualify for medicaid for pregnant woman solely because we make more then the income qualifications for pregnant medicaid.
