School-Aged Children

What time does your 5yr old go to bed?

So, during the summer L has always gone to bed at 9 and gotten up around 7:30.  He doesnt seem to need as much sleep in the summer.  During the school year he goes to bed at 8pm and is more than ready.  At 8am he is still really sleeping hard and really a troll to get up.  Im worried how he will do getting up at 6:45 or 7am.  I dont see that being enough sleep esp since now he will be in Kindergarten (real school)

I have been thinking about slowly moving his bedtime to 7:30 or 7pm but that seems SO early.  Its still day light, the kids have dance class, and football practice (which I have no idea what time his practice will be..probably around 4-5 until 5-6)  K&K have dance on Thurs. nights from 5-6.  On those nights I get home from work at 2:30 and they get home from school at 3:30-4pm.  We will be pretty pressed for time to do dinner and homework before 7pm on those nights.

How does a 7pm bedtime work for you?  I want him to get enough sleep but dont see it working out at 7.  Would 7:30 make that big of a difference than 8pm?

Thanks.  Im starting to freak out about how busy we will be.  Im nervous about fitting time for homework in along with dinner and activities and "play time".  I dont want Ls day to consist only of school, homework, dinner and bed.  Hes 5 and still needs time to just "play".

Man Im dreading kindergarten.

  • DD goes to bed at 8:00 and usually gets up around 6:30.  She has just always been an early riser.  On the weekends she still takes a 2 hour nap, though, and sometimes when we are driving home from school she falls asleep in the car.

  • My 5 year old is worn out since school started! normal bedtime is 8 and wake up time varies from 6:30 to 8. We have to be to school by 7:15 so she now has to get up at 6:30 every morning but she went from getting a 2 hour nap at home, to a 25 minute nap at school.

She has crashed a couple nights once my husband got her home around 5 b/c she is just so tired. I wish they got a longer nap at school, but I'm sure in time she will adjust. But we are going to start bedtime 30 min early also.

This...minus the nap (which I wish she would take somedays.) For school, I will be putting her bedtime at 730 so she gets a good amount of sleep.

  • During the school year - up at 7 so in bed by 7:30.

During the summer - up around 8:30 in bed by 9

  • My DD is 7 and has always gone to bed around 8:30 (since being in school) and wakes up around 6:45. Works out great.
  • School year, DS is in bed at 8 and up between 7 and 8

Summer, DS is in bed between 8 and 8:30 and up between 7 and 8.

He basically wakes up at the same time not matter what time he's gone to bed.  And, needs just about as much sleep in the summer b/c he's so much more active.

  • He's goes to bed at 8pm during the school year, of course he has still been taking an hr nap at school.  During the summer it's been more like 8:30-9pm

  • This summer, 9 if not later (except for yesterday, he crashed before 7).  Too late.  School starts on the 30th and I think I'm going to spend this week slowing bumping it back.  He doesn't get up until around 8 and school starts at 8:25, so we've all got to be up earlier.

I can't go too early - he has evening activities a few nights (which I bet he'll fall asleep in the car on the way home from).  All day school every day is going to be a lot for him.  I'd like to try for 8.  Problem is, my 2 year old still naps and when she does, 8 is too early for her, so he never wants to go to bed before her.  I forsee issues.

  • My dd goes to bed at 8, but is allowed to watch a movie until 9. I wake her up between 7 and 7:10 everyday usually and will probably keep that schedule when school starts on Wednesday. She eats breakfast at daycare now but will be eating breakfast at home so I'll still get her up at the same time to allow her some time to eat breakfast before she has to be at school (school starts at 8:35 here).

She takes a nap at daycare, but hardly ever takes a nap on the weekends and her schedule stays the same for the most part. I'm not sure if there is nap time or quiet time in her kindergarten class so I will alter the schedule a little once she starts if I need to.

  • Before DD went to K, she was up until 9:30 or 10. Now she's asleep around 8:30pm. School tires her out!

  • I was just talking about this with my H this morning.

My kids have always gone to bed at 8, even my older daughter.  She's allowed to read until 9 or a bit later, though.  She gets up at 6:30 to shower, eat, and get ready for school.  She usually has a bit of extra time in the morning, because I don't like to feel rushed and she's a morning person.

This will be the first year I'm going back to work as well.  Now, I'll have to take them next door to the babysitter at 6:45, which means a much earlier wake-up time.

My DD will be no problem -- she's a morning person.  But I'm worried about DS.  He'll be 6 on Wednesday.  He generally sleeps about 10.5 or 11 hours at night.  That will be tough if he has to get up at 6 in the morning.  I'm not sure we can move bedtime any earlier than 8.  He's just going to have to get used to less sleep, I guess!

  • This summer DS has been going to bed at 9 and waking at 7:30.  We are planning on moving bedtime up to 8pm with approx a 6:30 wake up at least for the first few weeks of school and then we will assess the sleep situation.
