Hey all! My name is Lisa and I have 2 great kids! I have a 10 year old stepson (Clayton) who my husband has primary custody of. I have raised him since he was four and he is just as much my kid as my 5 1/2 month old son (Colin)! Clayton is in 4th grade this year and he started this past Monday.
Re: Introduce yourself and your child(ren)!
Wow! I wasn't sure they'd make this board! I have been on Toddlers, then Toddlers 24+, then moved up to the Preschool board when they started it, because my son was still in preschool until the start of the summer.
I have a daughter who will be 10 in a few weeks who will be starting 5th grade on the 31st.
My son will be 6 in a week and will start kindergarten on the 31st.
My kids go to different schools because DD goes to a magnet program for 4th and 5th graders, and DS goes to our home elementary school.
I am an English teacher. I taught from 1996 to 2004 at a private school, but left when DS was born. I have been doing private tutoring since that time. However, I got hired back at my old school, so I will be returning to the classroom this year now that DS is in school full time!
Can't wait to get to know everyone!
Hi I'm monj and I have two boys. Hunter is 6 and entering 1st grade in September, and Logan is 6 and a half months. I'm very glad this board is here, and I hope to get to know other ladies with school age kids.
Woo hooo!
I'm Shorty. I have an 8yo SD, a 6yo SS, and a 7.5mo DD. SD and SS started school today.
SD has had lots of trouble in school and repeated Kindergarten. A lot of her struggles are due to her excessive absences (26 absences/26 tardies her first year of K). When she got to first grade, she continued to struggle, so they put her in every tutoring program possible. We also tested her for ADD and she scored high on that. That was about the extent of it, but it explains why she doesn't finish tasks, stares off into space, is afraid to answer, and forgets to bring things to class. This might also be explained by habits she picks up from her mom, but you guys will hear enough about her later. SD also has quite a few self-esteem issues when it comes to school, but those are slowly starting to improve.
SS is super smart. Well, he is when he isn't trying to get attention from goofing around. He picks up on things so naturally, but if he doesn't, he gets really lazy and wants someone to do it for him. In essence, he isn't used to trying. He has trouble following directions when they include more than one step. Example: "Put your books down and then write your name on your paper" will get his book down, but then he stares out the window or a bug crawling on the ground and doesn't realize that the other students are putting their names on their papers.
I'm sure I will be asking a lot of questions of how I can help them when we have them on the weekends. I'd like to really incorporate fun activities that are relevant to what they are learning in school.
Hi, I'm usually on Parenting or Pets. I have 3 girls - 9 y/o in 4th, 6 y/o in 1st, and a preschooler.
I have three children but only one is school age. DD is in Kindergarten this year; she did prek4 in a public school last year. She starts school on Monday. We did met the teacher tonight. She appears to be a first year teacher but seems really nice. I hope DD has a great year.
I am almost finished with classes for a teaching certificate!
ETA I also usually post on parenting.
Hi, I'm Laura, I have 2 kids and a 3rd on the way. My oldest, Alex (5.5), will be starting kindergarten on TUESDAY (the 24th, wow it came quick!) and my young(er) son Johnathan is 3.5 and in the public school's pre-k program (he is an ESE student).
My baby girl (Katie) is due to be delivered September 23rd (repeat c-section). This should be an interesting school year!

Hi, I'm Alison and I have two kids. My son, Caleb, will be 8 in November and just started second grade a week ago. He's loving it so far! My daughter, Aurora or "Rory", will be 3 in December. I stay at home with her and have started doing letter lessons and crafts with her while Caleb is at school. I have also started a blog about the things we do.
I am mostly on the Preschool board and occasionally the Indiana Bump board.
I'm the R of dandr. I usually post on parenting. I have 3 kids.
T started 1st grade
A started Kindy
and M will be starting preschool.
T had a rough kindergarten year. She does not do well with new situations, and ended up crying the first 2 months of school every.single.morning. The teacher was not helpful. In addition to that, she is a goody two shoes and was not used to all the misbehavior which freaked her out. Again, her teacher was not helpful. Her first grade teacher has been AMAZING. Called me on her 4th day to tell me how well she is doing, and T has been excited to go.
A---she's so different from her sister. She's doing great in kindergarten minus a few things that she just didn't understand and was too shy to ask, or more likely, just didn't know how to ask. I requested a different teacher for her and so far, I think its a lot better. She's a smarty pants....she soaks in everything that T is learning and remembers it.
Hi! I'm styme46 or you might see me post as momofaprincess sometimes too.
My dd turned 5 in May and will be starting kindergarten on Wednesday. I think I am more nervous then she is. We still don't know who her teacher will be or where her classroom is or any of that kind of stuff. I'm hoping we find all that out at the open house on Tuesday.
Missed M/C 11/5/2010 @ 5 weeks, 3 days* D&C 12/3/2010 at 9 weeks, 3 days
Hi! My name is Ann. I have a 7 year old SS staring 2nd grade on August 30. He lives with us 1/2 the time. I also have a 17 month old DD and we are going to be trying for a third soon.
Glad this board is here.
HI, I'm Kim. Just saw this board, so glad it's here! I have a 5 y/o DS starting KG next month and a 3 y/o DD in her 2nd year at a Montessori PS this year. I've been on the Knot/Nest/Bump forever, usually on Working moms and Parenting.
My name is Amy. I have a 4 month old son named Liam so I am not a parent of a school aged child yet BUT I've been teaching kindergarten for going on 5 years now so I think I'm going to like hanging out on this board!
Anyway, I will be glad to offer any advice/opinions to anyone who wants it!
Yay! I'm so excited to see this board!!! I'm "Mittens" (haha) and I have a 5 (almost 6) year old DD who is starting 1st grade in 2 weeks. She is also an AR, so she will acually be spending half the day in 1st grade and half the day in a gifted program the district runs.
My name is Shelley and I'm a mom to 3 amazing boys.
My oldest is my step-son. He's 15 and heading into 10th grade. I've known him since he was 5. We have primary custody and he lives with us 50% of the time.
He's AMAZING (and I can say that without bragging because he's not biologically mine, right?). He's a great kid. I call him the anti-teenager. No eye rolling, no back talking, no drama. He's got a heart of gold, he's a great student and he's an amazing big brother to:
Dylan - age 4 - just staring pre-school
and
Jason - age 2.5 - at home with me and a nanny.
I work 3 days a week so I'm not on the boards much but I'm THRILLED to see this board here!
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
I'm Megan.
I have a 13 year old daughter who will be going into Gr. 9 this year. Middle school is pretty rare up in my neck of the woods, so she is transitioning from elementary to secondary school this year.
I'm also a certified high school teacher (History and Social Sciences) but I work as a Museum educator instead of a traditional school setting.
Hi, I'm WOTPL
I have a 5-year-old SD who started kindergarten the first week of August. She went to pre-k last year.
Her mom has primary custody, and we usually only have her every other weekend, though we do sometimes get to pick her up from school once a week.
We have some concerns about her development, that her mom refuses to acknowledge. She has comprehension issues, and isn't able to follow multi-step instructions most of the time. She has confidence issues, as well as perception issues. She gets frustrated very easily, and will quickly say, "I can't do it." We try to encourage her and support her as much as possible. She completely shuts down sometimes, if she gets overwhelmed or thinks she's in trouble.
We would love to have at least 50/50 custody, but without mitigating circumstances the custody order can't be changed. We try to cram as much quality interaction into the time we do have with her.
I'm really glad to see this board (thanks, StarAnnice!!) and hope to spend a fair bit of time here. You'll also see me on BOTB and the EFF board.
Hi! I'm Brittany, and my DH and I have primary custody of his three children (SS 1 - 13, SD - 12, and SS 2 - 7) and are expecting our first together this next January! The kids have lived with us full time for a year now, and I quit my job in childcare to stay home with the kids to help ease them into living with us. Now that we have a baby on the way we've decided for me to continue to stay at home. This past year has really been a roller coaster, and I'm thankful to finally have a board to discuss older kid issues on! Thanks to everyone who pushed for it!
