family member has a staph infection

 My sis in law (husband sister) is fighting cancer (paralyzed from the cancer) but now has MRSA and is unable to take chemo.  She is having a hard time fighting the infection and the cancer has spread.  She doesn't have much time.  I am still going up to the hospital. I don't go everyday like my husband.   I don't touch her, wash my hands, and throw the clothes in laundry room when I get home and shower.  I'm gonna call md on Monday but I need to be there.  I'm sorry but I have to vent.

    Im sure if you don't touch the area you will be alright.  I am so sorry to hear about that.  I would want to be there myself.

    First of all, I'm so sorry for what you and your DH are going through.  Secondly, I'm a hospital microbiologist, and if she has MRSA, she will be in isolation and you *should* be required to put on a gown and gloves anyway.  So as you said, try not to touch too much in the room (not just her) and use the alcohol gel rubs.  It's not nearly the big scare that people like to think (in terms of catching it).  Over half the people who come in our ER with wounds and abscesses have MRSA, and they probably leave the ER and go to the grocery store.  You're at just as much risk picking it up anywhere as you are in your SIL's hospital room!

    DH had staph (not MRSA) a few summers ago.  I wasn't pg then, but I took precautions and never caught it.  We even slept in the same bed and I never got it.  Your doing the right thing, avoiding contact, washing your clothes.  Doesn't hurt to talk to your Dr.  but you defiantly don't want to miss the last moments with your SIL.
