Homework questions

Do you give free time to play after school before homework?  We have tried both ways with Clayton and have problems with both ways.  If he starts directly afterschool he is so anxious to play that he wont pay attention, if we let him do it after diner he we end up going past bedtime working on homework..

Re: Homework questions

  • I usually let them have about an hour of relax time and then they start their homework while we get dinner cooking and then they finish it after dinner.

  • One of my DDs likes to do homework in the morning (she wakes up quite early) and another likes to finish it as soon as she gets home from school.

  •  Usually I will let him have a snack and watch a little TV, then he does homework. I cant let him wait too long because he gets out of school at 3:20, so there isn't much time before dinner.

That's what we do too :)

It takes us a good 20 min or so to get home from Gabe's school...so, I usually just have him do it in the car, while he's in that mind-frame.

If not, then he does it as soon as we get home.  I've found that if I let him wate a tad, he gets out of his routine and fights me on it.

  • Sorry. Im trying to bump from my iphone and ahving a hard time. Have you tried breakin the homework up into smaller parts? Maybe have him do a small portion when he gets home from school to earn a reward (maybe he gets to watch 30 minutes of tv or 15 minutes on the computer). Then do dinner and finish the rest of the homework for another reward. Maybe he's feeling a little overwhelmed and it helps to break it up into smaller chunks.
  • That's ok!  I made a few typos too.  I'll leave them just for you Geeked

I was trying to figure out how to bump from my phone and could not figure it out so I thought if I "quoted" the last post and typed over that, maybe it would work. I ended up just copying your whole post and not being able to write anything.

I think I'll just stick with the laptop.

  • My son will get out at 2:45pm and we aren't home until around 3:10'ish. We let him watch tv and play, eat a snack for about an hour then get the homework done.

  • I let my kids have time for a snack and some time to play/relax after school, but it's LIMITED.  DD gets home at right around 4, and homework begins at 4:30.

I found that if I don't give it a specific time, getting her to pull her head out of the comics page, or come inside, or stop playing with her brother is REALLY hard.  If everyone knows that homework begins at 4:30, it's easier.

Also, I never let them play video games before homework time -- it's just TOO hard for them to pull themselves away from video games.  This year we're going to no video games during the week.
